Anyone else here fascinated by The Old American West?

There have been a zillion westerns, both film and TV. Not many western-themed movies these days, and I can't remember the last TV show (Westworld doesn't count). Maybe Deadwood?

Lately I've been on a kick of watching documentaries related to The Wild West. It holds some kind of fascination for me and I'm not exactly sure why. I suppose because it seems like it was such a unique time and place in history.

Considering what an impact it made, it really didn't last very long either.

Does it interest you? If so, why?

I'm not too fond of Westerns, but I do find the Wild West rather interesting. I recently came across Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers again and I just had to keep reading.

A few modern Westerns I can recommend are The Missing (2003), Brimstone (2016), Seraphim Falls (2006), Appaloosa (2008) and The Salvation (2014).

Love the old west!
Another excellent western I streamed recently in Netflix - Gold , grim & realistic like the Homesman.
It’s about the Canadian gold rush
I also liked the Coens remake of True Grit from 2010

I am to the point. I love westerns. First movie I ever saw was a western and fell in love with the genre. I know the movie representation of the wild west on 99% of the movies was sanitised.

As someone else pointed out, it was about hand painted signs, pretty girls (as per the sanitised movies), one on one gunfights, larger than life hero, horse rides (I tried few times and almost felt virtigo as it just seemed too high on a horse back and even an indoor horse riding seemed to be going at 100 miles per hour), etc. I so admire these guys riding horses in a chase in a movie, especially old westerns.

But, I would not want to live there in reality as the life must have been extremely hard.

I recommend everyone to check out "McCabe and Mrs. Miller"... Not only one of the best westerns, but probably the most accurate.

I believe I mentioned this above. Love this movie, it's a different setting for a Western, and the Beatty character is so peculiar. He seems befuddled but determined to fake his way through. Christie is the one who knows what she's doing. And Keith Carradine is so young and Keith-y. Naive and grinning. And for an Altman film, it's tight and sticks to the story. One of my favorites and I don't hear it mentioned much.
