Is the Back to the Future trilogy cinema's greatest trilogy?

It's certainly a trilogy that concludes with one of the greatest quotes in cinema history:

"...Your future hasn't been written yet. No one's has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one."

Only until Hollywood eventually ruins it with a 4th movie.

The sequels that currently exist to "Back to the Future" weren't exactly necessary. But, they were hugely enjoyable all the same.

Maybe this fourth movie could work. The thing is though, with all the time that has past, you really need an inspired reason to continue. And inspiration in Hollywood is not exactly in great abundance.

Hopefully, if they do bring it back, they bring back Zemeckis as well. "Back to the Future," after all, is probably the only great, perhaps even good, thing he ever did.

It could definitely work with some creativity, there really is no limit to things when you have a time machine involved in the story, anything could happen. But as you say inspiration in Hollywood is a rare species. But Zemeckis has no interest in it from what it seems and has said a 4 is never going to happen. At least not as long as he is around and can prevent it. I'm sure things won't stay that way after he has passed though. Hollywood is just playing the waiting game and surely is planning on milking this franchise dry.

His attitude is probably for the best.

And without Bob Gale and Zemeckis it would be hard to capture the feel of the original trilogy.

reply

Also without Michael and Chris Lloyd. It won't be possible. It might still turn out good but it won't be the same thing.

reply

Arguably the one of the most consistent (unless one counts Star Wars: Episodes IV to VI as a trilogy). Sadly, Indiana Jones no longer counts.

Sure, the sequels aren't as good as the 1985 original (what is?) but they're still significantly better than most sequels.

TDK trilogy and The Toy Story trilogy (although that won't be a trilogy for much longer) are also up there.

reply

And they're about to make another "Toy Story" ... which they probably shouldn't.

reply

"The Back to the Future" trilogy definitely feels like one work more than other trilogies like "Indiana Jones" and "Star Wars."

How about The Lord of the Rings?
