What I watched this week my fellow film fan:

The Walking Dead Season 1: I finally decided to start that show. A friend sold me the DVD Collection a while back but I never was too attracted by it and thought it would not really appeal to me. My oh my was I wrong. It was a real blast!

Love death and robots (2019 Netflix): “A collection of 18 animated short stories that span various genres including science fiction, fantasy, horror and comedy.” A cool addition to the Netflix library.

The Purge: Election day (2016 Netflix): I never saw the first one and I didn’t really enjoy Anarchy which I rate 5.5 for lack of substance and too much redundant “street chasing”. As for Election Day, I have to admit that I was pleased. Leo was more badass I thought and I really liked the Deli-guy and his crew. The suspense was not too exaggerated and there were no boring chases in the streets. 6.5/10

I finally got rid of my stupid cable and got Netflix. Omg I was sick of watching the ID channel! Even though Netflix sucks cocknballs now, I did find some decent flicks.

Apostle-7/10 decent story and extra point for the creative gore.
The Lobster-8/10 man do I love weird, and this flick was everything I want in a movie.
Bokeh-3/10 horrible, was like watching a come visit Iceland advertisement. The 3 points are for the amazing scenery.
Masterminds-6/10 entertaining enough.
Haunting on Fraternity Row-2/10 I thought I’d get a kick out of watching frat guys get slaughtered but this was not worth it.
The Salvation-7/10 I love a good Western and Mads Mikkelson is such a badass. Good movie.
Buster’s Mal Heart-8/10 I just watched this and I absolutely loved it. Very thoughtful and deep, was a delight.

I saw Apostle this winter: Pros: Direction, cinematography, settings, score, atmosphere, violence. Cons: Characters, plot, length. The first 40 minutes were especially boring but the last 40 minutes made up for it. 6/10

I also saw The Salvation: This Danish western was shot in South Africa and the cinematography and settings are looking beautifully sharp. Just to my liking. The always reliable Mads Mikkelsen is great but unfortunately, the clichéd story is based on a ridiculous premise that could have been so easily avoided by saying ‘’ Kick your gun towards me’’ instead of sending his 8 years old boy to fetch it. Or by shooting the bad guys when you had the chance. 6.5-7/10

We don't have The Lobster on our Canadian Netflix

Ok I agree with your points about The Salvation, but I think his guilt over his stupid choices in that situation is what helped him on his relentless quest for revenge.

Hi,

I saw the first couple episodes of the first season of Walking Dead, but never got into it. I haven't seen any of Love death and robots. Haven't seen The Purge: Election Year.

My ratings of what I watched this week:

I was scared we were going to strike out but Tideland saves the day. What a unique movie right? It has a Metascore of 26, that ain't right, right? I rate it 7/10.

It is a strange movie, but very interesting and beautiful in its own way. I suspect a lot of people were turned off or offended by the relationship between Jeliza-Rose and Dickens, and that might account for at least some of the bad reviews.

Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995) - great characters in this movie. Walken was great. I thought Mr Shhh wasn't a very good hitman. A fun movie 7/10

Jackie Brown (1997) - I loved De Niro's understated performance in this. Jackson turns in another great performance. Pan Grier was the weak link. 7.5/10

The Mule (2018) - I can see why this got overlooked by the Oscars. Everything was so so. There are some funny moments with Clint playing a 90 year old drug mule. Entertaining but nothing special. 7/10

American Gangster (2007) - First time seeing this. How did I miss this ?? Great performances from Washington, Crowe and Brolin. A bit long but a very good crime move. 8/10

The Way Back (2010) - Another first time viewing. A very good survival movie. Ed Harris steals the show. If you like survival movies this is one to see. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt. 7.5/10

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) - 8/10

I have to admit that I'm sorely behind on the works of Woody Allen. The only films I've seen of his so far are this and Mighty Aphrodite. This one was way better, though. Funny, honest, complex, insightful, and ultimately heart-warming as a whole. It's pretty much everything I expected from one of his films. Great movie.

The Village (2004) - 3/10

BORING! BORING!! BORING!!!

Tangerine (2015) - 8/10

Wow, this one took me completely by surprise. It took me a while to warm up to it at first but once I did, boy, was this a treat! This truly felt like a film made about our world. Not only was it filmed on an iPhone (which only made it feel all the more real and authentic), it's also about themes that only the films of today would explore. Transgenderism, infidelity with multiple genders, and prostitution right outside Hollywood are all hot button topics as of late. The film tackles all these themes head on, but does so in a very funny, crass manner that in no way feels like the kinda preachy, heavy-handed drama it could have been. Yet, it's still filled with plenty of heart. I think this is one that will be watched for generations to come.

I saw the village not too long after it came out and I remember liking it. 7/10

A few months ago I came this close to buying Tangerine for 4$ but had already like 100$ of stuff so it did not make the cut. I saw many good reviews since and yours it yet another one that made me regret cuz I haven't found it since.

Seven Samurai: 7.5/10

Crouchin Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Not a big fan. 6/10 (im a House of Flying Daggers kinda guy)

Elephant Man: Saw it it in High school so for what it's worth: 7/10

ExistenZ: It was in my Amazon basket this week but it did not make the cut. Maybe next purchase I'll get it for real then.

-Batman - marathon

-The Tony Danza Show (1997)
Finished. It wasn't the worst sitcom I've ever seen, but the jokes were just really lame.

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-The Sopranos - "Mayhem" and "The Fleshy Part of the Thigh"

Crocodile Dundee (1986) : "This was never my kind of movie and still isn't."

But, but.... ok.

Here I thought it was everyone's kind of movie. I rate it 7.5/10 and consider it a classic in its genre.

I assumed a large European city would participate in this. It is a good service.

As far as I can tell, only the university of Leiden offers that service. But library membership isn't free over here anyway. I gave up my card years ago.

I'm not sure. Probably a Dutch thing. Museums have ridiculously high admission fees as well.

Spider-man: Homecoming 6/10 (They wasted Michael Keaton)
Reservoir Dogs 10/10 (My favorite Tarantino film)
Hulk 7/10 (Had never actually watched this all the way through and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, particularly the comic panel inspired editing, I prefer this to The Incredible Hulk)
Killing Them Softly 9/10 (Love Andrew Dominik's work)
Blue Jasmine 7/10 (Cate Blanchet's performance was a little overblown but still carries the entire film)
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure 7/10 (Classic)

Jessica Jones Season 2 - First 3 episodes, so far so good, loved the first season.

Also just have to say that I love The Village and have never understood the criticisms of it.

Homecoming: My favorite Spider-man movie and I enjoyed Keaton although he could've had more screen time. yes. 8.5/10

Reservoir Dog: 8/10 Classic

Killing them Softly: 6/10

Bill and Ted: 7.5/10
