What is the name of this film?

Wracking my brains here to remember the name of a film I watched years ago. Can't remember any of the actors names either so IMDB is no good.

What I remember about the film is this. A man and a woman realise that everybody on Earth has vanished and they have no idea why they are still on Earth. Later on they meet another man (who may have been of Maori descent) and they work out that they were all at the point of death when everybody else disappeared. So they try and get to near death when they think that this event is going to happen again. I think that the first guy ends up in some other world at the end?

Thanks for any help...btw this film might have been made in New Zealand. Not 100% sure but it might have been :)
