What do you think of cultural humor in stories (such as in film or TV)?

By cultural humor, I mean humor that focuses on things like stereotypes, the conflicts between different cultures, culture shock, and other things.

I personally find cultural humor funny - I was a fan of movies like Rush Hour, Lost in Translation (both of which focused on ethnic stereotypes and culture shock) and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (which focused on pothead and nerd stereotypes). I can understand why they might not appeal to everyone, though.

Don't forget Fat Bastard from Austin Powers

Yeah there was some cultural humor, but as a whole Austin Powers focused on slapstick and gross-out humor.

He was so stereotypically Scottish was my point.

I didn't get the joke, but I'll give the film a look-see!

Culture shock humor is almost always funny.

Rush Hour is funny, in fact, many of Jackie Chan movies has cultural humors because he tend to like making his movies set in around the world, from Russia to Middle East, to Africa, etc.

The problem is, IMHO, that most people conflate cultural jokes with racial jokes. Racial jokes are more divisive. Sometimes they're funny, most other times they're degrading.

I agree, your opinion makes sense. I guess I should be careful when it comes to racial humor in the stories I'm writing....

Trading Places had some cultural jokes about blacks. "They're quite musical aren't they?"

Soul Man (1986) would not get made today.

reply

Not really my kind of humour.
