Spike Lee gets a pass for being a mediocre filmmaker.

People will remember him for Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing and Inside Man but he's done so much more bad than good mixed with stuff no one has even heard of: Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, She's Gotta Have It, Red Hook Summer, Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Pass Over, Chi-Raq, Miracle at St. Anna, Girl 6, Oldboy, She Hate Me, Bamboozled, Get on the Bus, School Daze.

Why does he get such a pass?

reply

Clockers and Summer of Sam were very good movies, imo at least
I really liked Oldboy and Malcolm X as well
The rest of his joints were not my cup of beer

Summer of Sam and he got game are my favs

reply

Summer of Sam is my top pick from Lee, Good film and a cracking soundtrack as well

reply

I don't think he does get a pass. He has his fans and his critics, just like most directors. He has done both good and bad films, but most directors have.

reply

I mean in the sense that people think he's some legendary filmmaker. He's done some good, but man, he's done so much worse.

reply

Spike Lee is not a legendary filmmaker.

reply

He's political, that's why certain people give him more praise than he deserves.
