$100,000 to spend 30 days in isolation
Would you do it? I would.

For sure, it's not ideal, but people do it for free all the time
shareI'm reminded of that old Twilight Zone episode, The Silence.
This wager didn't go on as long as a year and the outcome here turned out much better than the TV episode.
That's one of the TZ episodes I haven't seen yet. They did play in during the marathon this year but I missed it again.
shareIf you get the chance, check it out. It has a twist ending.
shareI watched it last night. Great episode! I thought I had figured out the twist when the guy offering the bet refused to deposit the money in escrow at the outset, but the end turned out to be even better than that.
shareI had the same thought when I first saw that episode. I kept thinking that there would be no money. Suddenly you are thrown for a loop! Glad you enjoyed it.
shareAs an introvert, this is my dream come true! lol
shareOf course I would. I already live a pretty solitary life, so I could handle it. The darkness aspect does make it seem more difficult, because I wouldn't be able to read or anything. If I could read then it would be a piece of cake. But even without that, I still think I could manage it, and would press on through it for $100k.
shareThe human race is clearly bored out of its freaking mind.
sharean interesting tale. also interesting the back and forth, negotiations. the guy on the outside was rather exploitative, i thought, trying to extract 50K from a guy he'd talked into going into solitary for two weeks.
glad he lost.
I think he hurt his chances by even making the offers because the other guy had no means of tracking time until he was told. Not knowing how long he had been in there had to be one of the worst parts of the challenge.
shareyes. the guy on the outside didnt play his hand very well. first a ridiculous bluff at the same time letting the guy know he was halfway there, then showing he was frantic about losing the bet.
all the negotiations undercut the pain of isolation as well.
Mike at VSauce did it for just 3 days.... And it was hell.

I don't think I would be willing to. Maybe for a million.
He had light and a much shorter time in isolation. Alati was in complete darkness and had a much longer time in isolation.
On the other hand, Alati had a variety of food delivered to him vs. Mike's liquid meal replacement, and Alati had more space and a bathtub.
$100K is very tempting
Lets see, plus or minus some change that works out to...
$3,333.33 a day or
$138.88 an hour
Nice money but I prefer my sanity, such as it is...
I would pass Tex
It would be very tough. I think the worst part would be having no concept of time, because you could never be comforted by being able to think "ok, 5 days down, 25 to go."
shareThat's the trick of it
I am a clock-watcher, I need to know when I'm in or out of a thing
Trying to devise a plan for time keeping was impossible in this scenario as you have to sleep and would become disoriented very shortly
I don't think very many people could do this willingly without tapping out.
Guys in some prisons might endure if forced to but it has to screw up the mind for a while
