Did you know that Casper (1995) is one of the most historic movies of all time?

First movie to have a CGI as it's lead.

reply

I wouldn't brag about that.

reply

Hmmm, you're right.

There were partially-CGI characters before that like in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but Casper had the first CGI-lead character in a feature length film.

reply

Toy Story came out the same year, with nothing but CGI-lead characters.

reply

And Young Sherlock Holmes had the first fully CGI character, a glass knight.

Both are great movies, but Casper is mostly watchable because Christina Ricci is so effing adorable. Also the ghost effects really are well done in terms of making Casper-esque cartoonish ghosts in the real world.

reply

I would argue that Christina Ricci's character is the lead while Casper is a heavy supporting character who provides motive and urgency for Kat's actions. In a lot of ways it's like a more kid-friendly version of Bettlejuice.

reply

Casper is in the title tho'. Pretty much similar to Transformers movies. Who's the lead? The Transformers? Or Shia LeBeouf/Marky Mark?

reply

Shia the Beef and Marky Mark were the leads. I'm talking in a pure functional sense. Whom was the story centered around? Why else would the Autobots need them to do anything? Compare that to the 1986 Transformers movie, where Spike and Daniel served mainly as assisting allies who occasionally had to be protected from peril, not main drivers of the plot who rely on the Transformers for backup.

reply

Yea, I think you're right.

reply

Actually, he is the lead, as he seeks out Cat and her father to move into the house. It's his journey. The movie starts with him. You just identified more with her because she's human.

reply

She wasn't. Casper got top billing. That is the way to tell who is the lead role.

reply

Yup. Had they written it from the point of view of Cat and her father getting a job, moving in, and slowly discovering that it is haunted, that would be her as the lead. It's his journey of discovery. Yes, it jumps point of view but that's typical for movies.
