jriley555, what I think we are not agreeing about is the word, "Godfather."

I am quite aware of James Brown's career (I just turned 67, so I've lived through it too). If you had stated that he was the 'Father of Funk,' i.e. that he invented it, I would not have disagreed with you. But there is a big difference between being the father of someone or something and being the Godfather of someone or something.

When I used the term 'the Godfather of Soul,' I was referring to one of the various monikers that James Brown carried during his musical career, and not what type of music he invented.

From: the Biography section at ... https://www.rockhall.com/inductees/james-brown

James Brown had more honorifics attached to his name than any other performer in music history.

He was variously tagged "Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" and even "the Original Disco Man." This much is certain: what became soul music in the Sixties, funk music in the Seventies and rap music in the Eighties is directly attributable to James Brown.

That bio then concludes with the following ... "If nothing else, his status as 'the Godfather of Soul' has remained unassailable."
Ditto to the fact that he was indeed, "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business."

Finally, please note that I did not link to his song, 'For Goodness Sakes, Look at Those Cakes' because I thought it was a soulful song. I linked to it because I believe that it was funk at its best. Plus, I loved his sense of humor when he asks Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, "Did you see those cakes?" at the 7:35 mark in the song.
