Sequels that don't require viewing the original

Maybe the first one is great, but understanding the story is not dependent on being familiar with the original.

T2 is a solid example of this. I'm pretty sure I saw T2 first and I was not lost at all. Then when I saw The Terminator it was awesome to see all the events that precipitated the events of the second movie. What do you think? Others?

Evil Dead II
The Dark Knight

Perfect examples. Evil Dead is ok, but number 2 basically retells the same story with more flair. I like Batman Begins, but it's definitely not necessary viewing in the way TKS is.

Star Trek II Wrath of Khan.

So true! Probably the least important first entry in history.

Troll 2. This movie has absolutely nothing to do with Troll.

reply

There both a fun watch, but yeah number 2 is totally standalone. Both bad but 2 is more fun-bad.

Fun fact, the writer / director were an Italian husband and wife team that spoke very broken English. The American actors tried to correct them, telling them many times no one talks like this, but they wouldn’t listen. A very funny bad movie. I love the “ you can’t piss on hospitality” line.

That makes a lot of sense. I've always been partial to:

"There eating her...and then they're going to eat me...OH MY GGGOOOOOOOODDDDDD!!!!!!"

reply

Troll is a better movie than people give it credit for. After all, it is the original Harry Potter.

reply

I think that you can watch the remake of "Scarface" without watching the original, but the Paul Muni original is still very good and worth watching!

reply

Ahhh crap, I missed that. I suggested a remake as opposed to a sequel. Whoops, nevermind what I said.
