Any directors similar to Bergman?

I've pretty much seen every Bergman movie I can get my hands on and I want -- no -- NEED more. Kieslowski is the closest I can come up with but I've pretty much seen all of his too. I like depressing films. I love the empty feeling. I love the silence. Something about these films put me in a trance.

Maybe check out Haneke? There’s a certain nihilism there, in any event.

reply

I've seen a few Haneke films and he does fit into exactly what I'm looking for.

reply

What have you seen? I could maybe help point you in the right direction, though you really can’t go wrong. My favorites are The Seventh Continent, The Piano Teacher, and The White Ribbon.

reply

Funny Games, Amour, Cache, Seventh Continent. I may have seen The Piano Teacher in my school days.

Next up, The White Ribbon. It’s a period piece and a bit of a departure from what you may have come to expect from Haneke, but there’s something there that’s both meaty and hard to articulate.

I was also going to mention Von Trier, as below. I’d try out some of his earlier films first, Braking The Waves (devastating), and Dancer In The Dark are good bets. His film, Melancholia, might be just what you’re looking for.

reply

I've seen two or three of his. I found them a little pretentious but that was years ago. Maybe I should go back and check him out.

reply

Perhaps Lars von Trier?
