What is the difference between sports cars and muscle cars?

Is it an age thing? Weight? Engine to weight ratio?

It seems to be age, but I just don't know. Corvette, mustang and camaro all appear to be sports cars today. But back in the day day, they were muscle cars no? At least the 'stang and the camaro.

Maybe it was a GM/Ford/ Mopar thing? Most of GM seemed to be touted as sports cars. Ford only has the mustang and that's been the case for decades, but many of their older rides were considered muscle right? Mopar really appears to be the owner of the title muscle car.
Everything they had was straight up SWOLE! To the point that I'm having trouble identifying a sports car by them until the viper, which could be considered a muscle car due to its ridiculous horse power.

So what's the dealy O folks? Is this confusing? Or am I stupid or even overthinking?

He hates cars! Well, not that he rides a mule or anything😂 he just doesn't really get into them. He does have some really nice ones,but they are all luxury sedans. He has a range rover ,but keeps it in florida. His favorite is this POS Ford f150 he takes everywhere😆

It was actually his wife that got me thinking of this. She's a total gearhead, but had no answer for this question. She said to ask you guys😂 she said nobody would probably know, but that it would probably get a lot of responses👍

And I'm not that young. Im ten years younger than the Footmiester😂

Fair enough Doc.

I think muscle cars are all about powerful engines with plenty of torque and good looking chassis which are meant to go very fast in a straight line.

Sports cars are quick but have smaller engines and can takes turns much easier due to their light bodies and less horsepower in their acceleration.

Muscle cars are more expensive (Generally) but sports cars are a decent start to understanding what speed is about.

A nice hybrid of the two would be the Shelby Cobra concept of 2004 which has the best of both worlds (A V10 engine and a smaller chassis and tighter turning).
