What did you watch this week fellow MovieChatter? (07/22-07/28)

BOOM!
It's time!

It (2017 DVD): This movie is about a bunch of dirty-mouth kids that enjoy beating up dancing clowns and scaring the hell out of them. Meanwhile, another group of racist bullies wreak mayhem in town and even go as far as killing one of the bully’s father. Quite shocking content I tell ya. On a more serious note, the first hour and a half was okay and the last forty minutes was very good. 6.5-7/10

Looney Toons: Back in action (2003 DVD):” The Looney Tunes search for a man's missing father and the mythical Blue Monkey diamond.” This one is quite the special effects spectacle. I enjoyed it, it’s silly, it’s fun and I always liked Branden Fraser. He’s seems like a good guy. Just like that Bugs Bunny dude. 6.5/10

Courageaous (2011 DVD): “When a tragedy strikes close to home, four police officers struggle with their faith and their roles as husbands and fathers; together they make a decision that will change all of their lives.” I like these Christian lecturing, heart-tugging, tear-jerking, inspiring drama movies. This one might be among the best of them all. Some people will mock it, other will ignore it but I think it’s every father’s responsibility to watch it. 8/10

Stoker (2013 DVD): The reasons why I enjoyed this slow burn thriller are the music, Mia Wasikowska’s performance and Park’s direction. I love his style and the movie looked great. The weaknesses were Kidman, Goode and the script, which were all simply average. Finally, I would’ve rate it higher if the alternate ending was the actual ending. 7/10

One of us (2017 TV): “A young journalist goes deep undercover within a mountain commune and becomes manipulated by a duplicitous cult leader. “ This DTV movie was actually better than some similar movies with bigger budget and better actors like The Factory (2012). Kept my interest for a movie with a rating of 4.2 and 440 votes (hi shogy!). 5-5.5/10

Abducted: The Karlina White Story (2012 TV): “A baby abducted at birth and raised by the woman who took her, eventually discovers she is a missing child, reconnects with her birth parents, and struggles with choosing between her two identities.” This is another decent DTV movie; it’s based on a true story and has some solid performances. Just the type of movie all our wives enjoy. 5.5/10

Hi Stonekeeper. I havent seen any of your movies though IT is on my list of movies to see.

I only watched one movie this week -

Hot Rod (2007) - Andy Samberg is an amateur stuntman who isnt very good at stunts. Silly and fun 7/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcJuY5LqIjI

reply

Only saw parts of Hot Rod. looked funny indeed.

reply

Heeey!

Stoker - I didn't really like it. It was a bit slow for me.

Nothing on the movie front for me this week. I did watch 3 episodes of series 3 of Witless. A couple of gals are witnesses to a murder, their misadventures in witness security and trying to get out of it by framing the killer (is it framing if the person is guilty?). The show continues to be funny, but I don't like DJ Sound as Fuck's storyline as much.

Oh, and I'm watching Preacher's new season. I don't mention shows I watch week to week, but I got nothing else this week, except random episodes of The Goldbergs and QI I see bits of at work lol.

I'll have more next week, I promise!

reply

IS Preacher'S new season, season 2 or 3?

reply

Season 3.

reply

My friend who introduced me to the show tought season 2 pushed the enveloppe too far and said I might like it but was not as great as S1.

What's your opinion on that sweetie?

reply

I don't understand, what does pushed the envelope too far mean?

I can't say I'm shocked by anything on the show. It's so over the top that I can't lol. I'd say I enjoyed season 2 a little less than season 1, but still enough. Season 3 isn't going that great for me. I'm still invested though.

I don't know if that answers your question lol.

How far along are you with Preacher?

reply

Yeah, I meant too over-the-top or ridiculous.

I just received S2 by mail, will start it when I’m done with Ash VS Evil dead S2

reply

Hi there!

Missed yours but i need to see It!

Braven (18) Momoa is an agreeable toughguy on screen and does well here as a lumberjack dude wasting gangsters to 'protect the cabin'
Fun, silly nonsense

Deep Blue Sea (99) gigantic sharks and Samuel Jackson...what else can i ask for?
CGI was awful back then...still, pretty good stuff

God's Pocket (14) Hoffman was excellent (that guy was a great loss) filmed in some of my old Yonkers stomping grounds, Tutorro is fantastic too!
Good crime/dark humor flick
Suggested by fellow poster db

Lost City of Z (16) you could say it was slow but i really enjoyed it...i looked up the real guy's story afterwards...he was correct in his scientific opinions but a bit foolhardy
Stay the hell out of the jungle!
Pattinson and Hunnam were both great

Rover (17) decent crime story set in a vague future landscape
Good movie but the real takeaway here was the Pattinson performance...he did not attempt an accent for this Aussie set thriller but he was otherwise fantastic
I think im a big Pattinson fan now and im not a 15 year old girl lol

Moon (09) Sam Rockwell is always excellent, the guy has 'it' on screen
The movie was pretty good but i figured out the 'twist' pretty early on...$5 million budget and it looked great

The Hollow Point (16) great little small town crime movie with Patrick Wilson, Jon Leguizamo and Ian McShane
Wilson has a Costner like quality...he does the 'awe shucks' thing very well and i will look out for more of his stuff

Just starting Sneaky Pete S2...great fun and Ribisi is amazing as a sly conman
The whole cast is great!

reply

Braven: added it
Deep Blue Sea: fun indeed 6.5/10
Lost City Of Z: added it
Moon: 7.5-8/10

I love Ribisi and should get to Sneaky Pete someday.

DAAMMNN, you watch a lot of movies, Shogie!

😎

reply

I try to see one a day after the kiddies and wife exit stage left....
I do about 4 or 5 over the weekend late at night by my lonesome

To be honest, many of mine are pretty lousy...i just like stupid, crappy movies (slashers, drive in theatre films, exploitation, cheapo indies...)
Frankly, most of you guys watch way better stuff but i like the sleazy violent ones...I have a cig, blast the garage radio, watch a ridiculously stupid horror/thriller movie and its a good time
I will be fighting every bum in The Bronx for parking and the damned mortgage soon enough at work...i like my trashy movies;)
It's the only way i can relax

reply

Whatever floats your boat, Shogie.

Somehow this boat keeps floating;)

So you watch your movies in the garage while music is playing?

Do you have a man-cave in your garage, sort of?

I imagine an old confy couch, posters, neons, tools, oil, radio, ashtrays, beer bottles, dart board...

reply

I could have described that better...my bad
I never smoke in my house so about halfway through most movies i take a Menthol break...i also stash a case of beer in the garage so another good reason to be out there lol

Pause the movie, a cig and two or three songs then back inside for the rest of the movie

Yep, Star Wars posters, Masks (Jason, Meyers, Boba Fett...) lots of tools, constant music...
somehow a fine and upstanding woman puts up with my BS;)
I got lucky

reply

Wow, we have similar lives.

I go in my shed to have smoke breaks too during film, only I quit tobacco so now it's only the green sticky icky.

In my shed: swords, dragons, paintball guns, cypress hill posters a table and chairs.

My wife keeps up with it but Im sure we both keep up witch some of their flaws too.

reply

Oh i didnt know you were a paintballer...i used to do that when i was much younger and it was really fun!
Sadly, my ankles and knees are 45 now (the rest of me is 17 at best lol) so i hung up my Tipmanns long ago

Great fun though

I watched the classic 1971 Australian/British film "Wake in Fright". It's a very powerful film about the Outback with great performances by Donald Pleasence, Gary Bond, Chips Rafferty, Jack Thompson, and John Meillon, our old buddy from "Crocodile Dundee". It was originally
titled "Outback".

It was not well received in Australia at first because they thought it painted a bad picture of the people in the Outback, and they lost all the prints. But they found one in Pittsburgh just before it was to be destroyed.

WARNING: There is a very violent and graphic scene in the middle of the film of a Roo Hunt.

I also watched the excellent HBO Documentary on Robin Williams.

Seems like i had a 2016 Horror Week.
I watched:

Light´s out (2016): The movie debut for David F. Sandberg inspired by his own short movie. Lights out is a fun horror flick. The pacing is really tight and there is no longer boring sequences. The scares are fairly scary even though a backstory to the "monster" takes away a lot. The characters are surprisingly symphathetic. 7/10

Hush (2016): The premise is simple, the execution done well. The main actress is good, and pretty. The antagonist could be more intimidating. It drags a bit in the middle and i can´t understand some character choices. Left me cold for the most time unfortunately. 6,5/10

Train to Busan (2016): One of the best Zombie Horror Movies in my opinion even though it has some problems like: One dimensional characters, bad acting/overacting, overboarding music and melodrama, unnecessary/bad cgi, logic issues.
The big plus is the tension, the pacing, and the zombies effects. 7/10

reply

I enjoyed Train to Busan too. A bit more than you. 7.5/10

reply

It´s a really enjoyable good movie. But because of many little things i take it with a grain of salt. It has no major flaws though in my opinion.

reply

Train to Busan _was_ on the more melodramatic side, that might be a cultural thing. But I wouldn't say it takes anything away from the movie as a whole. I thought it was excellent and very engaging, and I actually cared about what happened to the characters (rare thing these days in the horror/etc. genre for me).

reply

I cared about them, too.
But i have to say after they fought themself through masses of Zombies in the traincar with 3 people it took away some of the danger.
Because the feeling of Danger was huge in the beginning.

reply

Vampire Clay (2017) - Why do I do it to myself? Painful.

Ruin Me (2017) - A worse version of Fear Inc.

Ghost Stories (2017) - I was hoping for a bunch of solid ghost stories. Without putting spoilers I'll just say I didn't get what I was hoping for.

Abominable (2006) - Obviously lower budget but kinda cheesy fun.

The Monster Squad (1987) - The Goonies with classic horror monsters.

reply

I havent seen these but dosent look like I missed much
