i'm not a great malick advocate - in fact, i can't really say i truly loved a single one of his films - and i don't think there's any denying most people have found his recent stuff a bit lacking.
but tree of life was just 7 years ago, and quite a few people consider it a masterpiece, & one of the best films of the century so far. it's on the most recent sight and sound poll of all films at 102.
& the thin red line from '98 has received almost as much acclaim. it shows up at 183 on the sight & sound poll.
that's not to suggest that polls are the final authority on such matters. but they do give us at least a little insight into the impact his films have had.
so, in the eyes at least some people in the film community who care about such things, he's made at least two other films that rank with his 70s heavyweights. &, whatever his recent failures, it can't be discounted that he may have more in him. it's not like tree of life was a lifetime ago.
