Addiction

I've just been reading about the actor Jonathan Rhys Myers who it seems has relapsed on a flight, causing inconvenience and upset to his wife, the crew and other passengers. He is battling alcoholism and has been for some time.

How do you feel about addiction?
On the one hand it's a terribly sad illness which requires real heroic strength and determination to recover from, yet on the other the devastating consequences on those around the addict and the damage they do to themselves, if they cannot stop abusing a substance, can be catastrophic.

I have unfortunately experienced alcoholism, it tore my family apart nearly 20 years ago. The ramifications are still occurring to this day despite the alcoholic now being dead. I find it extremely difficult to let go of the resentment I feel.
It's not nice but it's honest.

I saw that about Rhys Myers this morning. Sadly, it's been a long fight for him. He must really be struggling since he has access to the best treatment facilities. I've always liked him in the movie The Children of Huang Sche. Probably spelled that wrong...

My city, which has a drug problem, has taken a new approach and its working. An addict can walk into the police station, ask for help, and they will immediately receive professional treatment.

I haven't seen him in much but I definitely think he has talent. I liked his Dracula series and a film with Julianne Moore, name escapes me.

I think sadly, drugs are a huge problem in many cities. The crime surge in London is definitely drug related. It's good to hear your city is reacting in a positive way.

Louis Theroux made a great documentary called Drinking to Oblivion which was heartbreaking.

I thought he (Rhys Myers) did an exceptional job of portraying Henry VIII in The Tudors. Very talented fellow. I wish him and his family well.

Addiction is a horrible situation for all involved. At least society is getting better at recognizing it for the serious illness that it is and treatment options seem to be improving.

It's not always about physical dependance but I suspect with drugs such as marijuana there is a psychological dependency that is just as bad as alcoholism for some people. Whether it is alcohol or drugs it is bad if a person hurts those around them directly or indirectly. If you can't function to hold a job regardless of whatever addiction you have it is bad for you and your loved ones.

Funnily enough I was just discussing how addictive weed seems to be despite it supposedly being non addictive. I don't know a huge amount about it, it was something I tried back in the 80's and got nothing from it. I do know several people of my generation who still smoke on a daily basis.

You probably got sold something of very low quality although it is very possible pot does little for you anyways. Might have been the best thing for you. My suspicion is that for a sizable crowd there is an emotional dependency when pot is consumed on a daily basis and often more than once a day. My experience is that if not actually high daily pot users can be very cranky people. The most mundane setbacks greatly upset them.

It is what it is. Many folks believe it's weakness but I believe it's the product of either genetic engineering or life circumstance, or both.
