What's a universally liked film that isn't as great as it's reception makes it out to be?
For me, it's most definitely Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

shareI agree with Lord of the rings, overrated and too long.
shareCouldn't agree more. The 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy was an earnest effort by that hack Peter Jackson but the end result overall was dull. To be fair it had it's moments here and there and Gollum was a triumph, but too much of it was plodding and ordinary.
It didn't help that a good deal of the casting was off. Elijah Wood made for an unfortunately effeminate and "damsel in distress" kind of Frodo. And Ian McKellen looked like a wizard well enough but more of a Radagast the Brown type than a Gandalf type. Gandalf was supposed to be the greatest wizard of the age and needed to be played by someone who could look the part.
My own nomination is '2001: A Space Odyssey' which was parodied by Mad Magazine and retitled '201 minutes of a Space Idiocy'. Said it all really.
Halloween (1978)
It's not a bad film by any means, but it's been hyped up far too much.
Casablanca is low brow war propaganda, financed by government, like Top Gun. A few memorable lines like play it again Sam pale in comparison to you can be my wingman Maverick or do you feel the need for speed.
I think America lost world war 2. Uncle Sam sacrificed its principles to defend Uncle Joe. Spending money and killing people impoverished America, while our government merged with corporations to form fascism. We ceded Europe to communism, and Palestine to the Jews who have been plaguing us with wars ever since, often based on false flags like the USS Liberty. America has lost all identity in the global shopping mall culture.
