What did you watch on this Simian week? (06/03-06/09)

Let'S talk about movies baby! Let'S talk about you and me, let'S talk about all the good things and the bad things.

The foreigner (2017 DVD): I’m a huge Jackie Chan lover and had to buy this but man, it was not better than all the rest of the crap that’s coming out these days. The story was just ok enough for me to care but the action, which is supposed to elevate the film, made the whole thing quite shameful. The first action we get to see is a cheap explosion that looks like a joke, the punch line being Brosnan’s reaction to it. Then when the police ask him who could’ve done such a thing as to put a bomb in his office, he lies and claims he’s clueless so he can send 4 of his guys to take care of sad Jackie. Do you think his 4 guys managed to do the police’s job? In Brosnan ingenious words; “One guy against the four of you and you lost him? Are you dumb and blind?” Yep, so what does our super-charismatic hero Brosnan does after? He sends more guys! Then he sends his nephew, Rambo. But turns out Rambo was banging is wife the snitch. Quite shameful I tell ya. 5.5/10

Planet of the Apes (2001 DVD): I never saw the original version but I enjoyed this one. I don’t know why I never watched it before because I love monkeys. For real, I always dreamed of holding one in my arms. It’s a fun movie but those monkeys like to talk a bit too much. I would’ve trimmed the script a bit and made the action more credible and violent. 7/10

Rise of the planet of the Apes (2011 Bluray): Great installment; they took their time for the story to be set and it was worth it. I love monkeys. I love them. Unfortunately, I am a ‘real monkey’ kind of guy, as in Monkey Trouble, so it took me a while to get used to the CGI but once I got pass that it was a thrilling and emotional ride. There are some very good special effects, especially toward the end. I like Franco but that was not his best performance, far from it. 7.5/10

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014 DVD): The main flaw in this one was the human characters; I failed to connect with them so I barely cared about their side of the story. The plot itself was so-so. The monkeys were great; they were credible and endearing. But then again, I’ve been a monkey lover for a long time, in case you don’t know. Finally, the action and special effects were solid and fairly entertaining. 7/10

War on the planet of the Apes (2017 DVD): Now I think this one is a great final achievement. What any final entry of a trilogy should be. Astonishing to see what would be a good movie with humans only, becoming a great cinematic experience with simian protagonists thanks to some amazing work by all involved. More monkeys + less humans + Badass Woody= 8/10

Wow, you didn't like The Lobster at all! What did you dislike so much about it to give it such a low rating?

reply

I found The Lobster to be overlong, not funny and not entertaining. It was just annoying and unpleasant at times.

reply

Nice to see you!

Law Abiding Citizen: 6/10
Love and other drugs: 7/10

I don't know why I though Simian=Feline.... lol

It's been way too long since I've seen Planet of the Apes 2001. I don't even remember what I though about it.

I liked the first two of the new trilogy though. Solid movies and I cared about the apes. Still haven't seen War, but I see it's on HBO now so I might catch it there sometime.

The passed few weeks have been really bad in terms of movie watching for me.

I caught Steamboat Bill, Jr. just as the house was almost falling on Buster Keaton. Awesome stunts in what I saw, but this version had some really bad modern chill music mixed in. I also caught the end of Metropolis, so now I've seen the beginning and the end. All I have to do is one day see the middle lol.

And last night I though I could sneak one in just in time for the end of the week with The Lazarus Effect. Alas, I fell asleep. My impression from watching half of it though is it's just another "scientists do dangerous experiments and it ends up biting them in the ass" movie.

reply

Hi Mina!

You probably confused with siamese. I actually learned the word Simian last week. But im french so thats my excuse.

Steamboat Bill, Metropolis; how old are you? 176?

Kidding but I guess I'll have to see Metropolis some day. either the start, the end or the middle.

Everytime I see someone mention The Lazarus Effect I have a false hope that someone else than me finally saw The Lazarus Project (2008). It's a hidden gem IMO

Have a good one hon!

reply

I'm also a foreign, so that's my excuse too lol.

You do know I'm a vampire, according to some folks on the board (*cough* dewey *cough*), so I might actually be 176!

Motropilis was interesting, especially visually for me.

Catch ya on the flip side, bud!

reply

I thought Croft was the vampire.

I hope you aren't, although vampires excel at sucking... nah I hope you aren't

I just saw The Foreigner this week and I gave it 6/10. Its ok, I wasn't thrilled.
I saw Planet of the Apes 2001 years ago, it was reasonably good experience overall 7/10 and it feels more like the same world the originals come from just updated with more modern effects. The new films feel less connected to their inspiration, I have never been very interested in them and have only seen about 10 minutes of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Mr. Majestyk (1974 Amazon Prime): "A melon farmer battles organized crime and a hit man who wants to kill him." Stars: Charles Bronson 7/10

Rider on the Rain (1970 Amazon Prime): "A US Army colonel in France tries to track down an escaped sex maniac." Stars: Charles Bronson 8/10

L'assassino... è al telefono (1972 Amazon Prime): "A woman whose husband was murdered five years previously, is stalked by his killer, who wants to eliminate her as a potential witness. What he doesn't know is that the shock of his murder caused her to have amnesia, and she doesn't remember anything." Stars: Telly Savalas, Anne Heywood 6/10

Thor: Ragnarok (2017 Neflix): "Thor is imprisoned on the planet Sakaar, and must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela. Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo 8/10

High Kickers (2013 Amazon Prime): " Zhao Yumin is a Taek-won-do coach , whose had hard times since his best student Han was killed during an underground championship . Zhao almost gave up when Ling appears at his door , insisting that Zhao must train her for the championships, and became the first woman fighter to lead a man's division." 3/10

reply

Hi!
Thor I will see for sure.
High Kicker got me interested all the way untill I saw your rating. lol

reply

If you like the marvel style comedy you will enjoy it a lot I think. The only thing it doesn't serve well is the primary villain Hela. She would have been better served in a more serious film.

High Kickers was bad, it was a struggle to get to the end. It did nothing well, probably deserves a worse rating.

Movies:

- Rich in Love (1993)
Boring movie. It started ourt pretty normal, but got more unbelievable as it went on. Almost none of the characters were sympathetic. The mother and Kyle MacLachlan turned out to be despicable.

- Clash of the Titans (2010)
I have no idea what the original's like, but this movie was horrible. Horrible special effects and horrible treatment of Greek mythology. Sam Worthington did a very strange accent and his acting wasn't all that great either.

TV Shows:

-The Librarians - "And the Echoes of Memories"
The very last episode of the show. I didn't think it was particularly strong, but I guess it was satisfying enough. I wouldn't have minded another season.

-The Flying Doctors - "Eye of the Beholder"

-Man About the House - "Another Bride, Another Groom"
The last episode of the show. And a very weird ending.

-Father Dowling - marathon

-Unsolved Mysteries - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", "Passion" and "Killed by Death".

-North and South - "Episode #1.2"

reply

I like your consistancy.

Good work

reply

I somehow feel like you're mocking me.🤔

So you haven't seen Clash of the Titans?

reply

I somehow feel like you're mocking me: Im not mocking you. I appreciate that since you started contributing you always have pretty much the same amount of input.

So yeah, good job. Because this is obviously some work we are doing here. Some work to advance the cause of movie watchin' and discussin'

So you haven't seen Clash of the Titans?: Never was tempted and am even less now.

reply

I wasn't serious about you mocking me, Stone! Hownos does like to mock my viewing habits, though. He doesn't approve of me watching The Bold and the Beautiful reruns.😑

I have no idea what the original Clash of the Titans is like, but I wouldn't recommend the remake to anyone.

After not watching anything lately, I finally got around to seeing something this week.

The Open House (2018, US)
After their husband/dad dies in a freak accident, a woman and her teenage son move out to her sister's holiday house in the mountains to get away from everything for a little while. While there they begin to be plagued with an escalating series of incidents suggesting that someone is living in the house or basement and harassing them. The movie started out alright and really seemed to be going somewhere, but fell apart in the second half, with the characters being stupid and inconsistent, subplots appearing out of thin air and going nowhere, and no real resolution to the story, or at least not one that made a bit of sense or was worth anyone's time. This one was a disappointment. It wasn't ALL bad, the first half was ok, but yeah. 3/10.

I also watched a few more episodes of "Legend of the Galactic Heroes", a really good anime series.

Haven't been in much of a TV/movie mood lately though. Plus my DVD player broke and I need to replace it. Lately I've mostly been reading books and playing video games in my spare time.

reply

The open House: yeah, I stayed away from it after reading reviews.

What game do you mostly play?

reply

Skyrim, mostly. I got it several months ago after several people recommended it, and it's been my main video game this year. It's such a huge game, there's so much to do. I'm sure I'll tire of it eventually, but for now I'm really enjoying it.

Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) - Det. Sgt. Mark Dixon wants to be something his old man wasn't: a guy on the right side of the law. But Dixon's vicious nature will get the better of him. Dana Andrews plays a hard nosed detective who finds himself in a moral quandary. A quality film noir that I somehow missed. Also stars Gene Tierney, Karl Malden. 7.5/10

The Homesman (2014) - Three women who have been driven mad by pioneer life are to be transported across the country by covered wagon by the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy, who in turn employs low-life drifter George Briggs to assist her. A good travel across the plains movie. Reminded me a bit of Hostiles which I saw recently. Swank and Tommy Lee Jones are very good in this movie. I was disappointed in one major plot development. 7/10

Zulu (1964) - Outnumbered British soldiers do battle with Zulu warriors at Rorke's Drift. This is a first class war/siege movie. Great performances from Michael Caine and Stanley Baker. Can't say enough good things about this movies. Just full of great secondary characters. Great buildup to the attack and a surprise ending. 8.5/10

The 400 Blows (1959) - A young boy, left without attention, delves into a life of petty crime. A lot of people love this art house/new age French drama. The movie was awarded a number of awards. The filming of this movie is unique and the ending is enigmatic. This movie is worth the watch. In the end I like plot driven movies and the plot for this movie is a bit thin. I think that was probably the intention. Low budget with some bad acting by the parents. The young kid was great. 7/10

thanks for the contribution but none of yours for me

I've been meaning to watch Zulu since free on the Roku Channel right now.

reply

It is a high quality movie.

The Tim Burton directed Planet of the Apes (2001) is considered terrible by most. Almost ruined the franchise. 5/10

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) was much better.

reply

I actually enjoyed the atmosphere but maybe the fact that I never saw the originals helped.
