Why are 70's directors so reveered?


I understand the historical importance but you can't say they were better so why the obsession?

I can't explain those guys, but so many amazing directors were making movies then... John Cassavetes, Vittorio De Sica, Robert Bresson, Ken Loach, Mike Leigh, Ingmar Bergman, John Huston, Robert Altman, Paul Mazursky, Sidney Lumet, Abbas Kiarostami, Stanley Kubrick, Sydney Pollack, etc etc..

Only Huston is a great director for me out of those but he was making films before the 70's.

I've forgotten about it because the golden age films were way better. Everyone knows their films because they insert themselves in every scene, which is insanely boring and destroys the delicate illusion of a film.
