Movie quotes that make one think

The Natural

Iris Gaines: You know, I believe we have two lives.

Roy Hobbs: How... what do you mean?

Iris Gaines: The life we learn with and the life we live with after that.

Good movie, imo. I suppose a convict welded into his cell could become quite philosophical over time.

Manny is always angry

Which is what makes the title of the story and its evolution so apt.

The old MF and his beloved -RT-. Bless your heart, boy.

Good for you.

Of course. That's makes it intimate on a Board like this. What's dear to (your) hearts makes me feel good. We have a connection then. I enjoy that intimacy. And I'll never use it against my fellows. I'll honor it, keep it safe and close to my heart so it remains.

Planet of the Apes - 1968

“You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!”

reply

Yes. It was new thing in '68. Big premier. I remember sitting in that theater (The Mercury) with my family like it was yesterday,,,50 years later. We'd went out to eat that Friday evening, then to the theater. The old man always ordered the combination seafood plate.

The color of the space capsule, that use of red, white and blue in linear design. It was neat. Classy presentation.

Hated to see the movie end. The old man taking surface streets home, never the freeway. The street lights passing by thru the neighborhoods.

Good memories.

reply

Yeah, a great twist ending back then that I sure didn't see coming.

One of my favorite Westerns gives me a lot to love and think about...'Tombstone'

In it Val Kilmer (Doc) delivers an absolutely iconic, forever tough-guy performance when he says stuff like...

His buddy warns him that he has
been drinking too much
Doc: 'Nonsense...i have not yet begun to defile myself'

Upon being told that he is too drunk to fight and is seeing double...
'I have two guns...one for each of you'

'$500...must be a peach of a hand...
I suppose im deranged but im gonna call'

When confronting the tough gunslinger badguy
'im your Huckleberry...why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave.'

reply

A gift, a blessing bestowed upon us there by Kilmer. Perfection. The consideration and study that he must have committed to in order to deliver such. Never a weak moment, or, false move, or, missed opportunity. Everything was taken care of and addressed. Bless his heart.

Stout citation, Yonk. Bully, bully for you, boy.

A Friday nite Direct Hit for Yonk,,,putting it down for us to recognize and preface, and to venture back in sight & sound.

Go on, you big, beautiful, Yonk, you, Friday evening is yours, big fella.

Thanks Cubby!
I really loved Kilmer in this one so much and i thought he was a very good performer in general throughout his career
(Apparently, Val is really impossible to deal with and ive heard thats why he doesnt show up so much anymore...which is pretty sad
He appears to be a difficult jerk...)

His Doc Holliday was such a casually psychotic and charming character that i would place him right on the shelf with Hopkins' Lecter...same level of scary awesomeness
THE upper level...

Kilmer was a shooting star...bright and glorious for a few moments
Boy oh boy will i remember him!

Take a look at "Felon"---2008---he stars as a convicted murderer who is incarcerated with Stephen Dorff who is in on a manslaughter conviction for protecting his family. He killed the perp just outside instead of inside his home. We're shown this.

Kilmer took vengeance on his perp (who murdered and raped his wife & daughter) by wiping the man's entire bloodline from the face of the earth. We're not shown any of this.

The plot is not good---is horse manure as these two try to survive a corrupt guard.

But, Kilmer's character has a message and he stands by it thru the closing credits with a letter read by a freed Dorff. It's a message about family. & it's worth sitting thru the horse manure.

***Dorff's young son is given a sequence midway thru that will break your heart.

reply

Dorff and Kilmer sounds prettygood
I will look for that
Thanks Cub!
