Favorite Friday the 13th Movie...and why?

Ok, we all know these aren't even close to the best movies ever, in fact they might be some of the worst movies ever, but since it's Friday the 13th tomorrow, and a lot of us were fans of this series growing up, pick your favorite Friday the 13th movie...

Mine is Part VI: Jason Lives. I just thought it had the best atmosphere and tone of the entire series, and it was the first "walking corpse" Jason, which I thought was awesome! It had some good laughs too! The only downside is I think it's pretty much the only one without any nudity, haha.

Honorable mention to the original, for, well, being the original. That's still a great classic jump scare in the boat at the end of the movie.

The worst was easily Part V: A New Beginning, because Jason wasn't even in the movie.

Any thoughts?

I've always been a big fan of part III. First time we see the hockey mask (plus Dana Kimmell is my favorite of the survivor girls).

Of the first 8 movies I agree that Part V is the worst but if you're including Jason goes to Hell in the mix, then that is my pick for least favorite. The inexplicable body jumping Jason thing really annoyed me (not to mention him strapping down the guy and shaving him....like WTF?).

I also really like 3 for it solidifying the style, getting the mask, and some great deaths. I especially like the harpoon gun kill and there are so many nobodies that get offed it's easy to enjoy. I don't find it as scary as Part IV or as engrossing so I picked that, but part III is up there. The only real fault of 3 is cramming in shots that were obvious 3D shots and then when you see them in 2d it looks lame.

Totally agree with this but there is a nostalgia element to it's lameness that I still enjoy lol

reply

Yeah it's forgivable. The worst one is the opening shot with the baseball bat, like really?!

reply

Haha I actually have a 3D version of the dvd that comes with cheap glasses that I'm going to have to watch again soon

I liked 3 a lot too! I love the doomed sex scene in the tent, and the cop telling the kid he'll be wearing his balls as earrings.

Forgot about the 3d, however I recall a 3d Blu-ray being released.

Ummmm Part 4 by a country mile. It has the best nudity, the best Jason, the best kills, and the Crispin Glover dance scene....next best would be Jason takes Manhattan.

reply

this is exactly my answer.
crispin glover weirds it up nicely in part 4.
the girls were a bit more attractive in that one as well, as i recall.

I fully agree with P.Hippo. "The Final Chapter" with Crispin Glover and Corey Feldman is my favorite. Pretty scary and the story is good, comes to a decent conclusion. I would also rank Manhattan as my runner up for it's over the top nature.

Friday The 13th: Part 2

This was before Jason became a superhuman zombie. It played itself straight, like he was just a human psycho on the loose, and that's what I like about it.

To be honest, Parts 1 and 2 are the only Fridays I like.

reply

I really like Part 2 for this reason as well. Not only was he just a human psycho, but not even a terribly imposing one. Compared to the size of later Jasons, part 2 was pretty average in stature.

reply

The third has the mask, but I just think the first was the best. It had good suspense and the story wasn't as ridiculous.

reply

True, if you want a story that's grounded in some kind of realism, the first is the only real option.

In the book "Crystal Lake Memories" Betsy Palmer told Sean Cunningham that he wasn't playing fair by not showing Mrs. Voorhees until the end. Basically the film is shown in a way that makes you want to figure out who the murderer is, but since it's a previously unseen character it would be impossible for any audience member to determine. She told him there should be a shot of Mrs.Voorhees somewhere earlier in the film but he stuck to his guns. She's right of course but I have to admit that until I read that it hadn't even occurred to me.

Hmmm, when I was a kid I liked VI the best because it was fun. I think as an adult, I would have to say 2 followed really closely by 1. I pick 2 over 1 just because it's Jason that's the killer and I liked that Ginny tried to use psychology on Jason.
