Why did jim caviezel's career hurt after passion of christ

I read an article in which Jim caviezel says that mel gibson warned him his career would suffer if he played jesus in passion of christ and right fully it did hurt. But why is it though ? Jesus is just any other role for an actor..what is the reason for his career hurt.
I do believe his skill has something to do with hit but after a starring role in 700 million hit one would assume he would be lead in some good quality movies.

This has been questioned on here before, and I think some of the responses had something to do with him being an arrogant ass in real life. I can't verify the validity of those claims, I've never seen him being an ass, but that could do it. Also playing the lead in a movie that isn't universally loved made by a director that isn't universally loved means it doesn't matter how much it made, studios still see him as a divisive frontman and are less likely to cast him. I think he's good, but I haven't exactly been missing him either.

I think it has something to do with Jewish control of hollywood and christ has been persecuted by jews..and they might have taken it personally.

I know that's around the time Gibson started publicly spouting that shit and it turns a lot of people off.

reply

Can you provide links of people saying that Jim is an arrogant ass in real life?

I’ve heard different stories about people working with him, and it wouldn’t suprise me if he’s arrogant.

reply

I don't have any sources on that one, I just remember there already was a thread here on MC that discussed it and I am not sure they had verification either, total hearsay as far as I know

If true about Caviezel then that parallels another actor who played Jesus namely Jeff Hunter in King of Kings from the early 1960's. Jeff was not brought back from Star Trek's first pilot because of the difficulty which was only amplified by the presence of his wife. Enter William Shatner and the rest is History.

Jesus is one of the most famous historical figures in the whole world since the time of recorded history, a revered person of virtue at the centerfold of religious movements that continue to shape and guide the hearts and minds of people. Once everyone saw Caviezel representing the face of someone they hold in such high regard, he would be type casted by that role. Since most people saw him playing Jesus, that's what they see every time he is on screen.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and suggest religious zealots hurt his career.

BTW, he has a new movie about the apostle Paul coming out this week I believe.

Why do you think his career has been hurt? According to IMDB he has been working steadily. I hated The Passion of the Christ! While I was in the theater watching it many people left.

I would have too,it was torture,quite literally.
Apocalypto too, several hours of my life I'm never getting back.

When I saw it with my wife, no one left. OTOH, it's a movie I won't ever see again and neither will my wife. Mostly two hours of a bloody beating and not enough historical or even anecdotal story telling.

Every reviewer at the time had commented that when the film ended and the audience left, it was the most quiet and somber exit the reviewers had ever seen. After reading this, my plan (yeah, I can be a bit of an ass) was to applaud. I have to say that that thought had left my mind completely by the end of the film.

As far as Caviezel himself, his acting seems good but to me he doesn't have the charisma of a big time draw. Still, he's worked steadily.

Absolutely spot on. I'd never even heard of him until 'The Passion of the Christ' and considering his work has included a starring role in a hit TV series 'Person of Interest' for five seasons in the years since, I really do find the OPs post slightly baffling.

He should have listened to Mel, he was struck by lightning during the filming of The Passion of the Christ, I guess Jesus didn't like the movie
