Why was he all over internet during 2016 oscars ? It felt little unusual that a 14 yr old kid in Michigan cares if he won an oscar....Call me a conspiracy nut...but given his relationship with Putin...I wont be surprised if it comes out that russian trolls have a hand in generating groundswell for his oscar buzz on the internet...that paired with all the publicist,agents and studios that profited from him wanting to get him an oscar....kinda resulted in this overblown internet buzz..i dont for a second think..this kind of ground swell is voluntarily started by his fanboys/girls.

He’s been a favourite for,decades and he never won despite being nominated several times. Why is it so hard to believe that some wanted to not see him go home empty handed again?

I never feel like his work is speaking for it self...its so hard to believe that some wanted to not see him go home empty handed again because that "some" are the people who are benefiting from his success like publicists,producers,previous producers of his films,studios and not the people who are judging his art...his campaign is one of the most blatant and pathetic oscar campaign in several years...you think all the articles about how hard it was to shoot revenant was written by reporters out of interest ? nope..they are given the assignment by their bosses who in turn are paid by DiCaprio team..you want to believe the ideal scenario of "everybody wanted him to win because he was the underdog and poor leo has been denied oscar for so long and he was working hard to achieve the goal" but in reality its much more messed up in the sense he is over praised for his previous performances because studios campaigned for him so hard despite not giving top 5 best performances of the year...as for the internet meme its more similar to harambe or grumpy cat..rather than people really wanting him to win oscar.
