Why did Ian Mckellan look so bad in The Hobbit?

Was it his makeup? I know he wasn't that old, only in his 70's. Something just looks off about his appearance. His performance was great as usual, and I love the movie.

Disclaimer: I have not seen the movie yet but could it be that Mckellan has gotten older but his character is supposed to be younger in this series? The contrast in age may have made the professional make-up job look less natural.

Were the Hobbit movies made at a rushed schedule due to pressure from the studio? That could have hurt some of the quality too.
