Why do the Oscars get criticized for being "so white"?

And why does no one ever say anything about the Razzies being way more white? And whenever a black person is nominated, it's either Eddie Murphy or Tyler Perry.

Its part of the issue we have in the country of trying to find stuff to make a thing about. The Oscars so white because the vast majority of people making films released in the US are white and the talent from the US and fed into the US is also mostly white, so without so much as having a single bias or racist action occurring you would have Oscars so white. The next largest group of filmmakers comes from Asian markets, very few films there even qualify to be considered for the Oscars here, but when one did a few years back Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was it ignored because it wasn't white enough? no it gathered ten nominations and won 4 of them. The Oscars has a history of nominating and awarding people of color which made the Oscar so white thing really stupid.

The big to do came largely from a few films people thought should have been nominated for certain awards but weren't just like many other films that didn't make the cut. Of those only Selma probably had a legitimate gripe, but the chances it was left out because it had prominent black cast is extremely unlikely, but a charge easy to make for people that enjoy causing divide.

I didn't watch the oscars, seen the grabbies on SNL , only worthwhile sketch of the night in my opinion. Can't Stand Alex Baldwins Trump.

It's all a distraction from admitting who's really running Hollywood.

Because the United States is a multi-racial nation.

Like I said to the poster below, how come no one criticizes the Razzies for the lack of diversity?

reply

Because there has historically been underreprentation of all groups of people besides straight white men. Since when is equality bad? Looking for things wrong, or finding them and not keeping your mouth shut?

reply

But how come no one criticizes the Razzies for the lack of diversity?

reply

Sounds like you just did

reply

Not literally no one. 99% of people don't bring it up.

Discussion begins here, speak your truth man

I think it's because it will look negative on minorities. I don't think it's fair to call out the Oscars.

The point is that non white people have less opportunities, thus make less movies, thus there are far more white people made movies to win razzies. It's a cultural and institutional problem, so I am with you I think the razzies are indeed too white, but less people care about the razzies in general, so the most popular awards shows are the example setters who get the bulk of the criticism

so what is the proper representation?

If in years past the top 5 films are mostly white led..as a non bias academy voter that is how you should vote. Which seems to make sense for a country whose largest single group is white and second largest group is light skinned and often listed and or perceived as white as well where the Hollywood industry is fed by a lot of countries that are also mostly white. Where does that leave the primary group that was complaining, African Americans, who only make up a small percentage of the total US population and black make up a small fraction of the acting talent in the world?

In the world one would say Asians are under represented at the Oscars, however Asian talent does not make the move into Hollywood in large numbers and they only make up about 6 percent of the US population.

Women have been represented fine for years, especially since they have separate awards and are qualified for others. But the primary stumbling block there is the other areas are dominated by men primarily because men generally are often more interested in those areas then women end up being. I know TV shows sometimes try to fudge it a little but the amount of kids coming out of HS even interested in the path that would lead to some of the categories skews male.

The reality is if the Academy is really rating films fairly and there is no bias at all..the nominations will be mostly white and male. So there is no way to avoid the label Oscars so white unless nominations stop being about merit, thus making the award worthless.

Well said, bishop!

It's the Left. They're not concerned about artistic merit, just the holy grail of diversity, and "being fair".
Participation Trophies for all!
