Why does Spielberg continue making cheesy family fare?

Does he really need a paycheck at this point? As far as I know he's the wealthiest person in Hollywood. He could literally make any movie he wants. Why does he keep releasing sappy kids movies and video game adaptations? Will we ever see him return to his hey day of intense thrillers, epic action/adventure and Oscar worthy drama?

I would love it if Spielberg got back to his roots and did something low-budget, gritty, and suspenseful like "Duel."

I also enjoyed his Night Gallery episode with Joan Crrawford. I believe that was on the pilot show.

I like his "Night Gallery" episode too. And his contribution to "Columbo." I would say his early work -- up until "Raiders -- has a less polished, more grimy look. After "Raiders," he became more of a family filmmaker, and his visual sensibilities evolved to reflect that change -- hence the glossy sheen that has become Spielberg's bread and butter. Personally, I could do without that Spielberg. I want '70s era Spielberg back.

It doesn't have to go that far back, I was thinking more like Jaws and Munich

reply

"Jurassic Park" is so toothless compared to the mean-spiritedness of "Jaws" (I can't imagine "Park"-era Spielberg entertaining the idea, much less killing off a kid and a dog, like he did in "Jaws").

reply

Yeah true. Jaws is a masterpiece.

According to a list compiled in 2015...Spielberg is the third wealthiest Hollywood mogul...number two is Aaron milchan...and the wealthiest is...george Lucas.

Reason #1 is most probably to make lots of money.

He's got all the money in the world and only so many years left. Why not take a few risks? "Raiders," "Duel" and "Jaws" are arguably his best films because during the time he made them he was a young wunderkind who didn't care what people thought. Then he did "ET" and overnight became a family filmmaker who had to maintain that reputation even when it ruined his films -- like the ridiculous happy ending he tacked on needlessly to "Minority Report" (which must have made Philip K. Dick turn over in his grave).

Your guess is as good as mine.

Like I said does he really need the paycheck?

Not really.
