Favorite film adaptation of TV show?

"The Untouchables" and "The Fugitive."

There don't seem to be a lot of good ones

Mission Impossible and Star Trek possibly

reply

The old Twilight Zone movie was pretty darn good, but I'd need to get more examples in mind.

"The Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" segment is up there with the best of '80s pop cinema. And Joe Dante's "It's A Good Life" is a blast ... until the lame ending. The rest -- meh (though the prologue with Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd is a fun, Tarantino-esque way to kick things off).

Jack Ass
Twin Peaks
Monty Python ???

reply

I can tell you some that were not even close to being good:

Charlie's Angels

The Avengers

The A-Team

The Man From Uncle

The Wild, Wild West

none of The X-Files movies

The Mod Squad

Dark Shadows (very disappointed in that one)

The only one I can think of in the same league as your choices, Angular, is Mission: Impossible; but I would love someone to do a quality film of Have Gun, Will Travel.

reply

A-Team was a fun movie!

reply

The series is even funner.

reply

Bewitched and Get Smart were terrible

reply

They all were.

Gilligan, Dragnet, Beaver, Brady Bunch, McHales Navy, I Spy etc......
Can't wait for Three's Company or Lavern and Shirley.

The Muppets had some good ones.

reply

Not everyone likes it, but I really liked Starsky and Hutch! It was funny.

Which raises the question, Angular: by "best" do you mean a movie that is both really good as a movie AND faithful to the essence of its source material, or do you mean a movie that the poster, like Miss Margo, liked?

PS I would also love to see a quality film based on The Prisoner, but that may be impossible, not only because of casting issues, but because The Prisoner so clearly grew out of another series, one titled Secret Agent in the USA (with a killer theme song, Secret Agent Man, by Johnny Horton, which became a Top 40 hit, and had the line, "Secret Agent Man, they've given you a number, and taken 'way your name . . . odds are you won't live to see tomorrow"), and was titled Danger Man in Europe. The star was Patrick McGoohan, who--hey, presto!--right after the ending of that series, turns up in The Village as the prisoner, a man with a number and no name, suspected of treason. To do a Prisoner movie well, the makers would have to do a narrative that embraced both movies, and I have just realized that I have handed some Hollywood asshole a priceless idea.

"The Untouchables" and "The Fugitive" weren't slavishly devoted to the originals though they didn't crap all over them either. They were good movies that both people new to the material -- and those familiar with the old TV shows they were based on -- could enjoy.

They remade "The Prisoner" years back with Jim Cavezial -- though I heard it stunk.

I'd like to see them attempt a big screen mash up of "The Prisoner" and "Secret Agent Man." I'm also waiting for them to cast Mark Ruffalo as "Columbo." Or Christopher Waltz.

How about "Firefly"? Any fans?

reply

Agreed, but neither Untouchables nor Fugitive was an irreverent sendup of the source material.

I know The Prisoner movie whereof you speak, and will never watch it. That would be like watching my parents have sex.

reply

Never watched the show, but thought that Serenity, the movie from the show, was pretty good.

I loved it.

Glad to know I'm not the only one!
I thought Ben Stiller had Paul Micheal Glaser's moves down just right.
The mid to late 70's vibe was there. Best of all, you got the funny bonus cameo of the actual stars from the TV show. A show I watched each week when it aired.
The movie was fun! It took me back in time.

reply

Ben Stiller is very talented. I agree he aced the part and Owen Wilson was the perfect match for him. And Amy Smart is one of my dreamgirls.

reply

Can't think of any. Sorry.

Bar none the most succesful movie adaptation of a tv series. I love them all, the Tom Cruise movies, original tv series and the newer tv series.

My other favorites:

Shaun the Sheep: The Movie (really good!)
The Fugitive
21 Jump Street
The Simpsons Movie
