Any Movies This Decade With Originality?

The writing is awful... Acting is awful.. Cliche after cliche.. No originality.. Bad narrative.. Seems like they are more interested in pleasing the studio and fakebook.

Some would say 'Boyhood'

I saw that, after liking "Tape" but I didn't like the movie that much (6/10), and thought it was kind of gimmicky, recording every year.. The movie seemed like an amalgamation of his previous movies.. Situations, writing, etc.

I did like "Before Sunrise" but that was made in the 90s.... "There Will Be Blood" was made last year, and even that wasn't very original, but still great.

I'd say the last great original movie was "Buffalo '66" - although I did like "American Beauty" and "Trainspotting" (also 90s)

There Will be Blood was 2007

Not quite this decade but the color is white.

The White Silk Dress
The White Ribbon

reply

You really liked that White Ribbon. I bailed out on that one.

reply

I did like it.

It also fits this thread. I thought it was original.

reply

Killer Joe. I mean the work itself, since the movie is an adaptation of the play.

well, lacking originality isn't the same as being awful. some of my favourite movies are small & simple and retell the kind of stories we've been telling for as long as we've been around. you can tread over that well trod ground & still find ways to engage.
but i do think there are several movies that i know that i think are different, unique, daring.

a ghost story, maybe?
my life as a courgette
the shape of water.
it's such a beautiful day.
dogtooth
a separation.

that's just off the top of my head. i'm sure if i dug deeper, i could name many more.

reply

I saw "Dogtooth"... 6/10.. I would call that original :)

The Forbidden Room
The Lobster

PTA has said himself of his love for "The Long Goodbye" which pre-dates this by over 40 years, and is a LOT better, though I would watch TLG twice.
