The Most Unoriginal Internet Question: Star Trek or Star Wars?

While I was always entertained by the oringinal Star Wars trilogy - never the prequels and I've yet to see the newer films - for me it's always been the Star Trek franchise for its grand exploration of ideas and alien cultures, mind bending situations, social allegories, and powerful conflict and drama, particularly in the DS9 series.

You can't beat The Shatner!

The Next Generation was my main squeeze, plus it was out when I was a teenager which was perfect timing. Overall I enjoy Star Wars more just for the atmosphere and lore, but I have a bigger appreciation for what Star Trek represented.

I'll always credit the TNG episode where the Enterprise returns to find the other Riker who got split off during transport. It made me think to question and answer the nature of consciousness, which I find invaluable.

It would be nice to have something that represents the best of both franchises, but without compromises and without copying. I have one storyline that I think rides the line perfectly, it's a hard sci-fi "fairy tale" which currently has two parts of a trilogy outlined.

I think it would be like Titanic if it was released. Yes, I went for that over an Avatar comparison, even though I like Avatar more. But Titanic is better for this comparison largely because of its name, and that it came before Avatar.

Oh cool! Good luck with that.

I only vaguely remember that episode in question so I think it's due for a rewatch.

One of the TOS episodes that had an inpact on me was Charlie X - an awkward teenager with immense power who was unable to deal with human interaction and unable to control his emotions and passions. After causing havoc, he desperately begs not to be exiled back to his emotionless and unloving world.

Was that the episode with the dolphin being sculpted using a device that was fully brain-powered, and didn't require any hand sculpting?

reply

I'm not sure as it's been a few years since I last saw the episode. I remember Charlie demonstrating his power to impress others and that could be one of them.

Star Trek.
All of them.

Star Wars.

Curious. Why is that?

Just personal preference. Somehow the Star Wars universe seems more real than the Trek universe. Also the SW universe delves more into personal stories, and has a cohesive philosophy.

Just curious, why are you more into Trek?

I can't really think of anything that would expand upon the reasons I mentioned in the OP. I've just always been more taken with the way Star Trek delves into philosophical areas, alien cultures, the way the future could hopefully be, the conflict between logic and emotion and what it means to be human, the exploration of social issues in a sci-fi setting, and the deep character conflicts and story arcs in the later incarnations of the franchise.

In comparison, I've always found Star Wars to be more a fun, pure Hollywood space opera, obviously more focused on the action and spectacle with occasional moments of contemplation and dark conflict - Luke's Jedi training and Dark Side temptation and his relationship with his father, and the malevolence of the Empire. Aside from all that, I see it as just a fun adventure story.

Okay, thanks.
