Irma and Travel Plans

I'm still here. Didn't leave yesterday because I still had too much to get done for trip.

Now I've been watching the news in earnest, hearing Irma is the worst Atlantic hurricane in history …

Ksp, where in Florida are you?? Are you and your husband stocked on water, food, and other emergency supplies? Man, I hope you're going to be all right. Are you in one of the areas with mandatory evacuation?

I have a dear friend in Florida too. She's in Lakeland.

So, now I don't know what to do. Have decided to forfeit the charges for the hotel I booked for tonight, stay put, and see what the news says tomorrow morning. I'd be staying in Amarillo, Oklahoma City, and Memphis. May not even be able to get a room in those cities, because people are heading out of the hurricane areas, and I sure don't want to have to end up sleeping in the car.

reply

That really sucks Cat. I think it's smart to wait and see what happens.

reply

I second that

Thanks, guys.

Hopefully by tomorrow morning I'll have a much better idea of what to do.

It would be pretty bad if I have to postpone or cancel, Dazed. I already have the car, my friend in North Carolina is leaving on a trip for several weeks week after next, and I *have* to go to see if this is where I want to move. If I wait much longer, it'll be winter, and moving in winter is a very bad idea.

But I'll save disastrous for things much more serious. Like the 10 who've died so far due to Irma, or being right in her path.

Has anyone heard from Ksp in the past few days? I'm 99.9% certain she said she lives in southern Florida, and she may be in one of the mandatory evacuation areas.

Yes, Florida is having a run on gas/petrol with so many people either in the evacuation areas and leaving, or people preparing to leave :(

I'm going to find one of her posts and see when she last posted.

reply

She posted once yesterday.

Just heard on the news about a tsunami and earthquake in Mexico...just wait until this hurricane it's over...my friendly advice,Catbookss.

reply

I just read about the mexico earthquake and tsunami warnings too :(

If I could just wait it out, I would, but as I said, I'm on a tight budget, have already rented the car, and the friend I'd be staying with is leaving on a trip the week following next week. As it is, I'm going to be out the $ for the hotel I booked for tonight.

It's a 4-day drive there, another 4 days back, and that's averaging about 500 miles (800+ kilometers) a day.

Granted, it seems like a simple and sensible solution, but as you can see, it's not simple.

Ksp, I know you have to still have power at this point. If you see this, please post and let us know how you are.

reply

Indeed,it's not simple...

Jose seems to be not to far behind Irma.
As of now it looks like that one will miss the coast.

Hang in there Cat. This is tough. Don't put yourself in any danger.
Hopefully ksp will let us know she is alright.

reply

Just heard from Ksp via PM, and she's okay, at least for now. Not in S. Florida, as I'd thought, although that is where she lived for years.

She's in MS, around the gulf. Just hope Irma doesn't decide to go farther West than they're already predicting.

Thanks, Dewey. This sucks all right, but it could be much worse; I could live in her path.

reply

I'm so happy she's OK.

Don't forget we're here for you if you need to vent about anything.

reply

I'm relieved to her she's okay too. She is out of the way of the *direct* path.

Thanks, Dewey. I may take you up on that venting offer, but at the same time, when I compare my situation with the flood victims of Harvey, and who know's what's going to happen to those in FL, and what's already happened to those where Irma has hit, my problems are small.

reply

Whatever you do, be careful. The weather is really crazy down south from what I've heard, but I think it might be dying down by now (I could be wrong, so don't take my word for it!).

My grandmother is in Florida, but I believe she's not in the direct path of the hurricane. So hopefully she'll be okay, but she lives alone. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the hurricane.

Has anyone tried PMing ksp?

reply

Yes, I PMed Ksp, and she's responded.

"My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the hurricane."

Mine too! Including your grandmother, of course. My close friend isn't in the direct path either, but all of FL is going to be affected. Hope your grandmother has water, food, and batteries on hand, so she can weather this out, and some good neighbors, seeing as she's alone. *crosses fingers*

Edit: Unfortunately it's not dying down. Irma hasn't even hit land yet in the US. Probably tomorrow or Sunday.

Yeah, it is kind of wonderful :)

Hoping Ksp will be okay, as well as her family.

Right, for now I'm staying put. I know, I can hardly believe that for the first time in my life I've planned a major trip, have done all this planning, and then weird Nature happens, just as I'm supposed to leave!

It is out of my hands right now. You're right, this may give me a clearer idea of how I feel about the move, or there may be some other reason for the delay.

Just tried calling the 800 number for AAA, a national automative service here in the States I resubscribed to for this trip. After the *eighth* ad in a row I was treated to while holding and trying to get some info and advice on what to do, I hung up. I'm *paying* to be spammed to death while holding to talk to a customer service rep? It didn't used to be like this.

It's 5:07 PM here now, Friday.

The hurricane isn't an issue where I am now, and wouldn't be until I got about halfway across the country. Concerned about being able to find accommodations, and the possibility of being stuck in a hurricane and/or tornado either along the way, or while having to sleep in my car!

It is a difficult decision because I've put so much effort, and $$$ into planning and preparing for this tri, and, frankly, a lot is riding on it. Ugh.
