I Need Recommendations!

I've seen almost 5,000 movies as an adult... I put my favorites down so I wouldn't be recommended a movie I already saw, but also to know my taste... Usually I get people to say "Oh man, if you love this, you'll love ____" and I've found the BEST movies thanks to recommendations for people who have lots of passion towards movies, like many on here.

Also, if you hit CTRL-F, you can type in a few letters or words, just to see if it's not already down below...

And, if you want a recommendation from me, just list your favorite movies, or any description... Not only just me, but I'm sure there are many in here who'd love to spread the good word :)

I'm just going to list a few of my favorite films you may have missed from the last, roughly, decade. I'm not a youngster, nor new to film, so of course I'm aware of a much wider range through many eras of filmmaking. Sounds like you got those covered.

I saw some great movies, but I should have narrowed it down better....

Looking for movies, 1930s-70s... Dramas (no mysteries please).. The screenplay is very important, acting, originality. I also seem to love movies that don't move that much (but I don't like silence).... I'll watch a movie from any country (I can always find subtitles)... Thanks again!

You have quite the comprehensive list here. A bunch of us could go on forever, (much like you have), on faves. I'm not sure how to edit myself and not duplicate some of your choices (Cntrl-F), but anyway ... The Eighties thread has a bunch of great suggestions, and maybe when I have more time I'll come back and see how things are shaping up. Good luck.

I saw "Z" a few times... Too much emphasis on "was it an accident, was it on purpose?" - but I will watch it again one day.. I didn't see his follow-up, made a year or two after (Czech politics i think)... I didn't care much for "Missing"

I guess I like non-genres or if I had to pick one, dramas...

You need to put your list in alphabetical order and add the release year.

You should see Tucker and Dale Vs Evil (2010), among others.

Holy shit, I forgot how long that list was (4 yrs ago).... Most of the movies I listed are from the 1930-70s.

I'm not into horror, though, but thanks. I do like "realistic horror" like "The Collector" (1965), and you might like it as well. "Onibaba" is another very good one. IMDB considers "Peeping Tom" horror, too, early 60s by The Archers.

Thanks for replying... I did see "The Station Agent" and believe I gave it a 7/10

Interesting how those two movies were released in the same year. I try to avoid reading even the tag-line, but do you know roughly when the "period" takes place?

I used to like David Lynch when I was in my late teens, but I fell out love with surrealistic movies very quickly (after being very interested in them initially). The last movie of his I saw was "Mullholland Drive", and I'm not interested in solving puzzles, lol...

I guess I love well-written dramas that are unique, and with characters I like. Have you seen "Buffalo '66'?

No haven't seen Buffalo 66. But thanks for the HEADS UP, because it sounds wonderful, and I also LOVE watching QUIRKY kinds of movies with Rosanna Arquette in them:

NOBODY's FOOL is another GOOD ONE to watch that she also stars in which also reminds me a bit of the PLOT of BUFFALO 66.

"THE BIG BLUE, THE WRONG MAN, and BLACK RAINBOW" were also 3 other good films that she stars in as well.

What's interesting about "INLAND EMPRIRE" is how no 2 people seem to agree what it's about.

But in an interview LYNCH did confirm how both MD and IE are ABOUT the FILM INDUSTRY.

And imo, it's also about the ABUSES of it (the same way as ERASERHEAD is about the ABUSE of the FACTORY way of life).

And of course HOLLYWOOD is also run like a FACTORY as well, because of the way it also CHEWS UP and SPITS out people (like the way we see HENRY's HEAD turned into ERASERS in EH ... and the way that NORMA DESMOND ends up being OUT of her MIND in SUNSET BLVD).

What seems to be going on in IE is the LEADING MAN is a NARCISSISTIC PREDATOR who SEDUCES every female working in the film (including the LEADING LADY).

And it's also got some of the MOST MEMORABLE scenes in it (like DERN'S DEATH SCENE where she dies right in front of 3 homeless people who discuss the BUS SCHEDULE ... and who don't call 911 ... even though the "WALK of FAME" where she dies is also full of several PAY PHONES at the time).

And she also PUKES UP BLOOD on one of the STARS of the MOVIE STARS before she dies. And then something even MORE SHOCKING happens, and you see the EXIT from STAGE 4 (the SAME MOVIE LOT where you also see NORMA DESMOND's car parked in MULHOLLAND DR.).

Then there's another TRIPPY SCENE where you see the GIRLS getting high in SUNNY LA (who are EXTRAS in the FILM being made), who open up a WINDOW and then end up standing on a SNOWY STREET in POLAND.

Because they're also listening to a RECORD that contains the AXXON N PLAY, and one of the GIRLS (the LEADING LADY) has also just found out that the LEADING MAN's seduced all of the other girls working in the film.

And they also discover that the film they're making is a REMAKE of a GERMAN FILM called 47, which was also based upon a GYPSY POLISH FOLK TALE (that's about 3 RABBITS).

Then the LEADING MAN also gets upset and tells the director that he'd NEVER do a REMAKE -- even though he also keeps doing REMAKES all of the time -- each time that he uses the SAME PICK UP LINE -- on each of the girls who are making the REMAKE of the GERMAN film.

The PICK UP LINE is: I've NEVER KNOWN anyone like you before.

Then after they're DUMPED the girls also make fun of it and say:

"Look at me and tell me if you've KNOWN me before."

Needless to say, I could go on and on FOREVER about INLAND EMPIRE.

Next time you think you've lost a message go back and CLICK onto the REPLY OPTION again, and your message should also still be there.

That's happened a lot to me where I'll think it's lost, and then find it still sitting there when I click onto the reply button again.

If you try it, then you might even still find it sitting there.

But if you sign offline and then back on again then it also might not be there, because I've never tried to find it again the next day or after shutting down.

That happens to me, too, but a quick refresh and affirmation will post. It's a cookie problem, but I try to copy the text because of this issue.

I HIGHLY recommend "Buffalo '66" and would guess you'd like it. Every friend/family member I've recommended this to enjoyed it, even a younger cousin of mine who doesn't watch movies like that. I did see "Nobody's Fool" with Paul Newman but I barely recommend it.

"NOBODY's FOOL" with NEWMAN isn't the same film.

He stars in that one which was made in 94, and ROSANNA ARQUETTE stars in the other one that's made in 86, and they also have NOTHING whatsoever to do with one another, (because they're 2 completely different stories ... which is also why I can't understand how they were able to use the same name when NEWMAN made the film that he's in ... because when ACTORS aren't allowed to use the same names ... why would they allow a film to use the same name)???
