It depends. Since going through a hardship, this is what I had to do and it depends on the bill.
For utilities, I let them go to about 29 days late. The late charge is typically $1-$2 (it will not kill you to pay it late).
For credit cards, always pay them before or on the dates they are due (writing about minimum payments, if you cannot afford paying it in full). These are the worst as everyone knows about those hefty finance charges, interest, etc.
For the rest of the bills, I would look to see how much of a late fee you will be charged if you do not pay on time. For me, it goes in this order.
Cell phone bill. If I do not pay this on time, it is a whopping $7-8 late charge.
Internet. It is about a $6 late charge
Sewage. It is about a $2 late charge but since it is from the city government, they also tack on interest for everyday it is late.
Car insurance. Since one of my part times gives me mileage reimbursement, I try to pay that one in full. Faster you pay it off, the faster you can go the rest of the five months without having to worry about it.
If I have any money in excess, I throw it on my credit cards (obviously if I cannot pay them all in full if they are high amounts).
