The cosmic brutality

Is that how you would describe the universe? Taken from a quote by Peter Wessel Zapffe.

In accordance with my conception of life, I have chosen not to bring children into the world. A coin is examined, and only after careful deliberation, given to a beggar, whereas a child is flung out into the cosmic brutality without hesitation.

Do you think the universe is, can be brutal, savage, vicious, cold, unfeeling, uncaring?

reply

It is neutral. Go back to the thread "Is Natural Evil" or something similar.

It is what we do now that determines if we see it as being brutal or self-serving.

reply

Agreed,arvinπŸ˜‰

The extraordinary is in what we do,not who we are.

reply

Wow, I cannot believe I was that deep 3 hours ago. Maybe my subconscious mind takes over "more intelligent" than my conscious mind.

I was looking at this right now and I was like "Did I really just write that?"

reply

Yeah,you didπŸ˜‰

reply

do you think life is futile and pointless?

reply

If that is what one believes, then it is true, and they make it true. Meaning and a "point" is something we have to find for ourselves or create.

reply

It just does not care.

reply

the universe doesn't care about anyone or anything.
humans are insignificant to the universe.

reply

We absolutely are. The universe existed long before humans did and will still exist long after they're gone.

reply

The interesting thing about humans looking out into the universe for "meaning" or "ultimate purpose" is that it's looking the wrong direction.

Humanity's presence can truly only damage the universe and its balance.

Life only serves life. The base purpose of life is simply to self-perpetuate.

Beyond that, it's up to us to look into ourselves for meaning.

reply

Yep. A good example is the updated entry for the Earth in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

Mostly harmless.

reply

The Universe isn't brutal....it just is. It has no personality. And, it formed Earth, where many nice things happen. So, that's not really "brutal".

reply

It's true on Earth there are many nice things, but there are also many horrible things.

reply

"Horrible" and "Nice" are human constructs. There is nothing "horrible" nor "nice" about The Universe / Nature / Reality / Cosmos.

reply

Would you agree the universe is indifferent?

reply

Yes- indifferent or neutral. neither good nor bad.
Good and bad are subjective. You're a hungry lion so you kill a zebra- that's good for you and your lion cubs. but it's bad for the zebra family. We will all have different views of good or bad based on our own interests. the universe doesn't care either way.

reply

The universe is indifferent and uncaring towards all life. The universe doesn't place value on our lives.

reply

I think cosmic indifference would be more accurate. The universe doesn't give a shit.
