Fan pandering good or bad?

The first such fan pandering I can remember is in Xena. Where they speculated whether Zena and Gabrielle were a couple. Who cares, but since it was never intended, the answer was no. It got so extreme in the show, that it got confusing. Like Zena giving Gabby an antidote, by kissing her on the lips? Oooook? Not sure that was necessary.

Similar thing happened in Teen Wolf, with people wanting Stiles and Derek to be a couple even though it was not intended and will never happen now as most of the main cast has escaped the show for various reasons.

The latest Once upon a time ep brings my question up. Fans wanted a musical ep. And they gave them one. The ep turned out ok, but what do you think is fan service good or bad.

Imo some can be good. But to change the entire plot, and screw up your own show = bad. Like constructive criticism is fine. And many times they do screenings/test audiences. But to totally mess stuff up is bad.

Case in point Hawaii 5-0, the reboot. What started off as natural/organic writing with Steve and Danno, turned into what is now called 'carguments'. Arguments in a car, they have on their way to solve a crime or something.....at first they came naturally from the plot. Steve driving recklessly, and Danno being the responsible one grumbling about it. Of course, character motivated. It makes sense.

But the fans wanted more, so now they just have a random cargument just to have one. They get in the car and OUT OR NOWHERE bicker about some random thing that has nothing to do with either of them or the plot. Just there to knock the by the numbers cargument scene in the ep out.

H5-0 is now a totally different show than it started. And yes many people were wondering if they were a couple, once again no. But never the less they pandered to the fans. With other characters making jokes about them being a couple.

I think during this interactive/meta era it makes sense to do so... but it's on the creators to successfully integrate these things into the shows seamlessly so that we don't notice them. If they fail to do so... it's a problem with the execution not the concept. Same with product placement... now that piracy is so prevalent, it makes sense to adopt new revenue streams... but they should do it so it never jars you out of the natural rhythm of the story or program.

It's cool sometimes but bad when overdone. Case in point -- The Force Awakens had so much ham-handed fan service stuff it felt like the actors were about to break the fourth wall and wink at us. Too too much.

I haven't seen any of the shows you've mentioned, so can't comment on them specifically. But I've got to say I love the word cargument, LOL!

If we're going using the dictionary definition of pandering (gratify or indulge [an immoral or distasteful desire, need, or habit or a person with such a desire, etc.]), then no.

If showrunners/creators/writers have a very strong vision of where a show is going to go, from soup to nuts, and are talented, then no. There are a few shows I can think of like this, and I feel like it's on me to trust them. So far, I haven't been disappointed, but that's only with the best of the best of shows.

If showrunners/writers, whether very talented or not, hear about a good idea from fans, are inspired by it, and incorporate the idea into the show, I'm fine with that too. After all, a good idea is a good idea, whether its born in the writers' room or outside of it.

But merely pandering to fans, because they want to see X,Y, or Z, happen, no.

How was Hawaii five O different when it started? I watch it but I missed the first 3 seasons, I know Jerry and Lou weren't on the show in the beginning.

reply

When it first started Danno was in every ep, as much screen time as Steve. Lou is basically Danno replacement since the Danno actor wanted more time off the show to do other things. The dynamic was totally different imo. They also replaced other characters as all. The show is not too different. But what I am saying is that the dynamic of the show changed from a basically buddy cop show to a team effort show.

If you watch the first 3 seasons you will see the show was pretty different. Now the show deals with international things where as before it was more local stuff I guess. Might even ruin the show for you since it used to be so much fun. Still a good show, but it used to be better.

Sometimes they do it in a snarky twisty way like "Oh you want X? Well here you go!" and then give something totally gross that is not what anyone wanted. Basically trolling us.
Like in Game of Thrones when a lot of people were saying they keep showing the women naked but not the men, they are asking for some nudity equality. And why not. Lets have at least one naked man for every 10 naked girls, why not?
And then they show some shriveled old man naked or Hodor's prosthetic horse dick or something, instead of one of the hot young dudes naked. I felt like they were really trolling the audience there. 'Oh you want male nudity? Here you go!'

so.. be careful what you ask for.

A bad thing thing. It completey ruins shows. The Xena thing annoyed me as well.

I dislike it so much! It's done a lot in the soaps I watch

I think writers shouldn't pander to people who ship non-canonical ships. There should be a clear separation between fan fiction and canon, especially in this age of entitled, vociferous and hashtag-happy shippers who struggle to differentiate between what's real on a show, and their personal fantasies.

reply

I agree virile. Sometimes it works, most of the time it can lead to a downward spiral. Like relationships. The Manny was funny and in it's fifth which was it's last she got together with Maxwell. The show lost it's edge and recurring jokes.

Hey Strannger! :D

I remember the nanny, I loved that show!

I didn't know that the writers were pandering to the Fran/Maxwell shippers. I thought they always intended for them to be a couple.

reply

Niles and C. C. Too. I enjoy the back and forth banter. They were huge and shipped since season two.

reply

Niles and C.C. were hilarious. There was so much tension between them that them hooking up was inevitable.
