Do you prefer Foreign or "Hollywood/American"movies?
Personally, I prefer both Foreign and American
sharePersonally, I prefer both Foreign and American
shareForeign ALL THE WAY!!
shareI like American, British, Hong Kong, Korean and a little bit Japanese and Chinese movies.
I don't usually interested in French, German, Russian, Italian, Spannish, Indian, Thai, etc.
It's probably due to language barrier. If you are American, there is a 50% chance you know nothing else but English and it's not even English, it's American English. So really, I doubt some of us would understand English films very well neither.
shareI love both - I love to learn about every country... But there are times I want something in English, as it can be demanding constantly watching foreign movies, when my eyes have to be constantly glued, as opposed to being allowed to go run to the freezer and get a Snickers ice cream, or to take a leak.
Italy is probably my favorite country for movies when it comes to a non-English speaking country.
And per-capita, they might be the best (pre-1980s -- I don't like many movies made during my lifetime).
"it can be demanding constantly watching foreign movies, when my eyes have to be constantly glued"
Yep, that's why I don't watch a lot of foreign films. Dubbed is worse than reading subtitles, but I feel like I miss so much (actors' expressions, backgrounds, etc) if I have to have my eyes glued to the subtitles.
So, American (with a strong lean towards indies), British, and Aussie films are my favourites.
Foreign (from my perspective).
I like learning about other peoples and cultures. A good way to do that is to view the films they make.
I'm also OK with subtitles, I realize something may be lost in translation at times, which is unfortunate but I take it all in stride. I figure it's the cost of doing business to learn about the other 95-96% of the world population.
I see little out of Hollywood, it doesn't suit my tastes normally but there are always exceptions. To each their own.
I like both, but I feel like foreign movies surprise me more and are not as formulaic. Well some foreign films have their own formula too (like Bollywood), but I'm generalizing.
shareYou can't prefer two things equally, that is not what prefer means.
I think most of the movies I have really liked have been done by
foreigners, or been foreign movies. For instance, Stanley Kubrick,
did 2001, Spartacus and Paths of Glory. The US does action and
violent movies, and stupid movies. Even kids movies from foreign
countries do not condescend to kids, the US is trying to impress
stupid on everyone. For example the movie U571 was supposed to
have been based on a true story, but there was nothing remotely
like that that happened. Yeah, a German enigma machine was
stolen, but the story was a complete BS lie, and it was not even the
Americans that did it. In the US more and more we live in a fantasy
dream world of BS, so that is one reason why foreign movies are
usually so much better. Look at "Black Ice" I think it is, the "Humans"
or any of the science fiction that comes from Britain versus the idiotic
stuff that we do in the US. Just shoving stuff in a movie that backers
think will fit and draw viewers is what we do in the US, foreign movies
generally have a point. However, there are some very good Indie type
American movies, but I am speaking in generalities.
Stanley Kubrick was born in the United States
shareThanks for mentioning that. Kubrick was indeed an American, in fact the movies I disliked from Kubrick were done in the UK ... how interesting. It says in Wikipedia that Kubrick left the US because of creative differences with Kirk Douglas, who made his best 2 movies in my opinion. OK, forget Kubrick.
shareIt's a common misconception because he ended up settling there, but Kubrick was raised an American. Mel Gibson on the other hand was born here but raised in Australia.
