A New Tactic re the Trending Bar???
Seriously!!! Using the trending Bar in a way it wasn't intended!!! I thought it would've have been caught wayyy before now.
shareSeriously!!! Using the trending Bar in a way it wasn't intended!!! I thought it would've have been caught wayyy before now.
share
I noticed last night, hope they'll put a stop to it soon, some people are so childish.
This must be stopped !
share[deleted]
yes!
shareSame here, Dazed. They're back at it again too. 😩
shareFor the record I only responded to something that was trending. Before any of the naysayers try and box my into a label I disagree with.
share[deleted]
I think you're right about Troll, Dazed. I checked the titles in the trending bar and his name was at the top thread which he created and is the only one in the thread. Some other titles has different users. But by clicking on the titles, you can at least see who's putting them on the trending bar. That pretty much shows you who the trolls are too. I just put Troll on my ignore. Think I'll take screenshots of them all and email them to Jim so he can weed them out. If everyone does that, it'll clear them out quicker.
shareOn Imgur! Imgur! Of all places..seriously?!? And it's ongoing today..Seriously?!?
Traveler, everyone I know is on Imgur. So, now it's as bad as the postings from IMDb. Wow, I think I'm taking a hiatus from here until all of this gets sorted out. I'll try back in another 2 weeks or so. Yes, I am REALLY upset by this. It makes MovieChat look amateurish!
Easy there, I'm the one who uploaded a screencap on Imgur because, well, that's what I always do in those cases (and it's obviously set on private).
shareVolunteer to be a mod.
It seems like Jim needs people.
I have no clue why those trolls are still here...literally one is named 'troll'.
(for anyone that didn't see last night's debacle..they were trending movies titled the cword and the nword and typing nonsensical comments into a bunch of movies and just flooding the trending area)
This site is in it's infancy and that kind of behavior will sadly deter people from joining or staying. I hope Jim bans them and fast.
There will always be a need for trustworthy mods. The more the merrier (or at least better), and the easier it will be to deal with trolls as they arrive.
shareHow would you even know, you've supposedly never used imdb. The trolls there were nuts. We do not need a ton of mods.. we need quality over quantity.
Hiding one's imdb past is a troll tactic. Maybe you're being honest but I saw what trolls did on the other alt-imdb site. They did everything they could to become mods.
As I recall Leia didn't say she never used IMDB, she said she lurked rather than posted. A lot of people here have said the same thing.
I dunno, I supposed what you're saying could be true, although I haven't been on IMDB2, and I gather that's the alt site you're talking about?
In the early weeks of this site, it was easy to tell who was trolling, and who was a legit poster. There was barely any trolling going on at all then. I've seen Leia's postings here since the time I arrive, and she's very consistent. If I got a vote, I'd vote for her as a mod.
Trolls will act 'normal' to become mods. Maybe tooo normal and too nice.
Being too eager and not having an imdb past?
I mean, what is that??
If one has never posted on imdb but suddenly posts here?? That doesn't even make sense?
They did that same fake act at the other board to become mods. Kissed major butt.
Sure, I've seen trolls act normal at times, but haven't seen that consistently from them, at least not the ones here. Did they do that on IMDB2?
I don't think Leia has been eager to be a mod. That hasn't been my impression.
Not sure how long you've been here, Cactus, but back before all hell began to break loose, quite a lot of very nice posters said they'd been lurkers on IMDB, and it was only after the boards were shut down they realized what they'd lost, so began posting here to help the site along. I was surprised how many said this, and none of those accounts have become problems.
Thank you for vouching for me, Catbookss. I appreciate the support. ☺️😇
I can easily tell you're not a troll either, as I mentioned before, but a few others somehow don't understand.
You're welcome, Leia, and right back atcha :)
I haven't been here for a few days, but the posters I saw who called me a troll were trolls themselves. It's a common tactic they use. They targeted me, and a few others, who were speaking out against them, and even more because we wanted moderation and common-sense rules so the environment here could continue to be as it was for the first several weeks. They don't want that, naturally.
One or more of them insisted it was because I wanted to be a mod. Yet when I pointed out I'd never posted that I did and to please provide proof to back up their claims, they fell silent ;)
I knew Ben was a troll. I'm still confused about Wilson, though. And I didn't notice that they stopped once you said you never wanted to be a mod.
shareThey didn't stop attacking and lying about me on other topics, but dropped trying to claim I wanted to be a mod, because they knew they had no proof.
shareCat, It seems like the trolls have gotten worse on here since the ignore button got implemented too. Have you noticed this? It's like they decided to go berserk to get attention any way they can! That's just pathetic!
shareI have noticed, Styx. Some assume some have put them on ignore and therefore feel free to lie about and malign other posters because they don't think their lies will be seen, or countered and disproven.
I didn't realize they'd gone berserk by spamming the Trending section until I came back today. Yep, they want attention by any means they can get, and will attempt to find any loophole they can to attain it. It is pathetic, and what's worse is that Jim, who's put so much time and work into this site, has to take the time and energy to figure out some sane means to deal with them. When he should be left alone to improve this site on his own timeline.
The bad thing is I've noticed a number of good posters who are now MIA. A few who've posted it's as a result of the trolling that's still allowed to go on here, and at least one I know of with whom I've communicated with privately, who's said the same and has silently left.
I don't want to leave. I loved how this site was for several weeks after I arrived here. But unless I start seeing some concrete action taken soon, which IMDB never did, I'll leave too. Reluctantly, but who needs this kind of shite?
We don't need power hungry moderators like you. Stop trying
share"The bad thing is I've noticed a number of good posters who are now MIA. A few who've posted it's as a result of the trolling that's still allowed to go on here, and at least one I know of with whom I've communicated with privately, who's said the same and has silently left."
That's really unfortunate. It sucks that people are leaving. I still think the site holds great promise, but yeah the trolls are starting to spoil things for people.
I'm with you, I liked the site a lot when it first started; it had a nice laid-back environment, lots of cool people, quality discussion, only a couple trolls. Now it's changed.
I don't intend to leave the site, though. I'm gonna stick with it. I'm confident the situation will improve once the site has developed a coherent moderating policy. In the meantime, though, it's sad that people are leaving. I hope they come back once the situation has improved.
Well Kira, if I leave, I'll return...when the dust settles. I just don't like things the way they've become and hope things get cleaned up soon. I also hope the other good folks that leave, will come back too.
shareIt is unfortunate. I don't see any of the trolls leaving, only the good people who've dropped out. The irony is it means the trolls lose too, because their "audience" diminishes, which means less attention, which is really what they're after.
Yeah, it really was great here for the first few weeks. I loved how friendly, civil, open and welcoming everyone was, except for a handful hiding away in their hidey holes, acting like 12-year-olds (with apologies to many 12-year-olds). The discussions were really good. There are still some good ones but now there's a lot of chaff to sort out from the wheat.
I don't want to leave, really I don't. But I am pretty much hanging on here by a thread, and need to see some concrete actions (aside from an ignore button, which I appreciate, but is only a temporary Band-aid) so I know Jim's serious about not allowing MC to become troll-ridden.
Has it gotten better in the last 12 days while I wasn't here on Movie Chat, for You, Catbookss? You've been here practically from the start, Catbookss, so how're you feelin' now?
shareHi NeverStand, yes, it's improved here greatly within the past 12 days. I'm no longer hanging on by a thread :)
shareDuring my time away I checked in and read thru a few threads, and noticed that there's quite a few users who were here from the beginning who aren't now. I wonder if they went back to lurking only. Just observations.
Anyhoo, there was one comment from someone in this thread to you which said you were a troll. Nope, I can attest that you aren't. 👋
"Yeah, it really was great here for the first few weeks. I loved how friendly, civil, open and welcoming everyone was, except for a handful hiding away in their hidey holes, acting like 12-year-olds (with apologies to many 12-year-olds). The discussions were really good."
I sooo agree!!!
I've noticed the same thing about several users who were here early on -- some quite prolific -- who've disappeared. I gather some didn't weather the troll-infestation, and gave up, and some may have gone back into lurk mode.
Thanks, NeverStand. It's an old and tired troll trick to accuse those who call them out of being trolls, or being socks, or whatever.
For the past week or less it's been more like it was here in the beginning, I'm happy to say. Welcome back!
Just call me Never. I tend to call others with a shortened version of their user name.
Yep, their tactics are soo obvious as to be droll.
I figure those not seen for several weeks went back to lurking, or they're on extended holiday from Any sites. I can't see any one who was here during those good startup days finding anything better than they had it here at MovieChat. The deactivation of account hasn't been implimented yet, has it? Since they couldn't have deleted their account or deactivated then they at least can come back and have their posts & whatnot still here. I hope 9 and the others will be back..eventually.
Thank you for the welcome back. I've missed yall.
Glad you noticed too Cat, for a minute I thought I was just seeing things!
Yes, it is a terrible shame after Jim has worked so long and hard to put this wonderful site up for us GOOD folks. I'll never understand the people that waste their time trying to ruin nice things. I guess I never really will...other than the fact that they have low self esteem, and no self worth whatsoever...just the lowest of low, who are so hungry for attention, that they'll jump ANY hoops just to be noticed.
The funny part is...if you think about it, it's like we're the one's in command, not the trolls. We tell them to jump and they say, "How high"? So naturally, they want to impress us by jumping higher than us. And then, they're given a little treat for it...lol. That's just a funny way of looking at it. Sometimes I just think in funny ways. 😉
But seriously...it IS pathetic! And, as I said to another poster who said they were thinking of leaving for awhile, I also mentioned taking a couple week vay-cay to get away from the trolls and do something more enjoyable. It's gotten way out of control already and needs to be stopped. I hate to do it too, but I just don't want to deal with the crap anymore. 😩
And Tyler is, obviously one of the trolls, he follows everyone saying the same crap over and over. He's proven himself to be a busy troll. Betcha he makes a comment on this post too!
but wherever you go, there will be this kind of stuff
shareExcept it wasn't here for the first few weeks, and I don't think there's any reason to tolerate it here. Look what happened at IMDB: they tolerated it and all that happened was it grew and grew. Do you want to see that happening here too? I don't.
shareYou know you are not bound here Catbooks, don't you?
All I see is you complaining about it here and adding nothing to the mix other than your personal preferences above others with the added caveat that many/most/all people here feel the same as you.
You've been singled out on IMDBarchives as a trouble maker by its administrator. Are you open to the concept that you 'could' be the one at fault here?
I'm not saying you are but do you have it within you to be reflective and skeptical of your own self?
This user is "John Carter" owner of IMDb2 and it wishes to stop users from registering here and posting.
shareIf they could verify they are who they claim to be by updating their IMDB profile we'd all know for sure that it's not just a fraudster stealing someone's name.
shareNo "John Carter" aka Betty had tons of IMDB user profiles. Some of them she used to troll. Others she pretended to be a good user.
John Carter's telling words " a mod with whom I have some acquaintanceship with and like for might target you as a result of this connection. "
True, lennonforever, but MovieChat's the only place I 'go', so I'm really REALLY hoping the Level of trolling here would be much less than other places. HAS it gotten better? Any new developments in the last 12 days, or updates here that I missed? I've noticed aLOT of new names/users.
shareLook, I don't know either of you from a hole in the wall..I'm sure you're nice people.
But that right there, is exactly why I wouldn't want you as a mod. ^
You do not know her and both of you are vouching for each other? (I have buddies on imdb that I've known for yearrrrs and I wouldn't even vouch for all of them haha they are not mod material and neither am I.) What if catbooks decides she doesn't like me because I declared that books about cats are boring reads. Will you ban me in her honor?
I prefer mods whom are not cliquey and too eager for power(hiding their imdb past is a red flag too). But it's not my site and you may very well become a mod.
I've begged the posters from the 'I need to know' section..but I don't if they read it or even want to be mods.
Um, no. I wouldn't ban anyone for something so minor. Unless you started swearing at her or threatening her. (Apologies if Catbookss is a male. I remember you said once what gender you were, but unfortunately I forget which!)
sharehaha swearing??
um....why not tell her to put me on ignore?
People fight, that's human nature, why is that a bannable offense? Unless I started harassing her or stalking, which I wouldn't.
As a mixed latina feminist, I went through heck on the politics board but I didn't put those people on ignore, I was trying to 'understand' other peoples pov. I used my ignore very rarely and I never reported anyone. I believed in free speech.
I do not believe in harassment though.
Well, with swearing it depends. If it's excessive and bordering on harassment, then it would be definitely worth deleting the post. If it becomes a habit, then I might consider the banhammer.
shareIMDB gave people warnings or higher posting quotas.
Even the calmest people have 'off' days.
We don't need parents, we just need the trolls gone so the board/trending area is useable.
@CactusPants (cute ID)
Forgive me for dropping into your conversation. As a fairly new joiner to MC, I noticed this interesting thread and began reading. As far as mods (which are sorely needed) duties are, why not moderate/prohibit profanity as well as harassment? The commandment could be "Thou shall not post/reply with any of George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words"" Check them out and if enabled there could be a bleep with a warning to the poster. Lively debating is something which can be achieved without profanity or lewd comments. To be clear, I'm not referring to everyday mild swearing. The boards would be more cordial and the Ignore button would rarely be used except for those who cause havoc. Just a thought....
Edited to add: There is a list of no no words on ShutterStock
"@CactusPants (cute ID)" Thank you.
No no words? Well, maybe if this website only had boards for rated G movies.
But this board has a lot of adult themed movies and topics to be had. Drugs, affairs, gangs, abuse, Magic Mike.
Life is not rainbows and butterflies..life itself is shocking. I think talking about it is therapeutic because movies are therapeutic.
In my own personal opinion, I wouldn't care if Jim beeped out cuss words. Although, if we couldn't have adult conversations then people might see this board as pointless.
@CactusPants
Thank you for your reply. Please read my suggestion more carefully. When I refer to no no words I directed you to George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words" There is a reason why they are not permitted on tv (American). Also, the list on ShutterStock which lists ALL words, some not needed to be bleeped. Keep in mind adults are not the only viewers of these sites. Children also read these sites. Over at tMDB a Profanity filter has been enabled which can be turned off or on. So, if the reader insists on using/seeing the f-word, the c-word and any of the foul words he/she deems necessary for conversation, the filter can be left off. Personally I feel the words are not necessary to converse/debate and are used by posters with a limited vocabulary to get their point across. Just sayin'....
A profanity filter would definitely be nice, optional or not.
shareI'm under the impression that adults are reading my reviews, the movies I'm discussing are rated R.
Cussing does not bother me, if someone offends me then I'd put them on ignore. But I don't dictate other peoples words.
There can be nice areas where everyone agrees to not cuss. But give others the chance to express themselves too.
@CactusPants. (just too cute!)
Cussing/swearing (h__l, d__n, cr_p) is far different from using foul/lewd words...f__k, c__k, c__t, which are more than your everyday swearing. It's offensive! Why do people feel the need to use those terms? It's not necessary. I go back to the limited vocabulary view. Why not say "Get the he__ out of here." Instead of "Get the f___ out of here." F'ing this and F'ing that! Every other word is F! It's because they've lost the ability to converse civilly. I miss so many, I assume, great movies because of the spiraled down language culture. I never heard those words growing up, never heard them in high school. Something has changed...and it's not for the better. Can we not try to be more genteel?
I think we'd be missing out on great contributors if we judged people based on a few words. After all, they are just words, they only have power if you let them.
I don't respect people that use the Nword irl but for historical reasons I'm okay with it, it's history. Did you not watch the Color Purple or American History X? They're great movies regardless. We can't pretend the word never existed.
"I think we'd be missing out on great contributors if we judged people based on a few words. After all, they are just words, they only have power if you let them."
Do you really think people in general are judging others based on a few words, and want them banned as a result?
If words are just words, and only have power if you let them, and that's truly what you believe, why would you have a problem with people who use the N word (as well as a plethora of other racist terms)? After all, according to you, words are just words, and only have power if you let them.
It's my own preference who I respect or not..why would I force others to live by my rules?
If someone calls me "bad words", I have the choice to ignore them or not. Why ban someone just because you don't like them?
Obviously you can respect -- or not -- whomever you want to, and who said anything otherwise?
If someone calls you "bad words," why should this be acceptable? Why is that necessary, in your POV, to be part of "free speech," which is not actually free and never has been. Do you think people are incapable of behaving in a civil manner, disagreement or no? It's already been proven here, in the earlier weeks, that people are perfectly capable of just that, WITHOUT any rules or TOSs. Yeah, I know, you weren't here then, and didn't witness it, but I can assure you that's exactly what happened, until the past few weeks. Making it clear that some are *not* capable of conducting themselves in an adult and mature manner, and more than that, have NO INTEREST in doing so.
"Why ban someone just because you don't like them?"
Clearly it's not, nor did I say anywhere that it was (another Strawman), nor is it what I think. There was one poster I interacted with briefly with whom I disagreed. I viewed him as a contrarian, and still do. I don't object to that; he can say whatever he wants to say, and disagree with me however often he wants to. But he wasn't, as far as I could see, trolling. I simply stopped responding to him. There wasn't even any need for me to put him on ignore.
trigger warning, no no words ahead:
I cuss (I say effing, shyt and bytch)
I have a dark sense of humor.
BUT I also went to college, I'm a vegetarian, I've never smoked pot and I believe in god.
If you judge people based on cuss words then you will push a ton of people away. You said you wanted them banned.
Uh, okay. Why haven't you addressed anything I said to you in my post?
And where did I say I wanted people who use cuss words banned? Obviously I didn't, but I have to wonder why you're saying these things.
Particularly as you also said in your option, mods should be:
2) People who are decent, respectful and genuinely care about keeping movies alive by providing a great atmosphere for fans and great discussions.
https://moviechat.org/movies/general/posts/58d02b0079fdf10011f4b9f1
Or does being decent, respectful, and caring about keeping movies and shows alive by providing a great atmosphere only apply to mods? Why should it?
Uh you did say ban more than once and do not ask me to go find it because knowing you, you edited it out.
You're a liar if you claim you never said you wanted them "banned". I have eyes.
Yeah, mods need to delete pointless trolls if they're harassing others. They do not need to act like parents though.
Mods should respect freedom of speech and let movie fans have a place to talk to like-minded individuals. That's what I consider a 'great atmosphere'.
Let the people who hate cussing, use the ignore button.
Again, where did I say I wanted those who "who use cuss words banned?" Please provide proof of that. I already know you can't, because I never said it, so why would you say I have, if you have no ulterior motive?
Why, if you're merely being straightforward and presenting your POV, would you find it necessarily to misrepresent mine? My posting history is here for anyone to view, as is yours. Please provide proof that I EVER said I wanted to ban anyone.
Although I will say, and did, and still will, there are trolls here whose purpose is to disrupt and or destroy this site, or to overtake it. You yourself said the same thing, and objected to what happened on IMDB. Why are you (apparently) reversing yourself on this point now? And why don't you respond to the direct questions I've asked you?
What happened to being "decent and respectful" -- your words?
BTW, do a word search on this thread. You used the word "ban" far more often than I did. I have eyes too, as does anyone else reading this post/thread.
Initially I liked and respected your posts, but they've become increasingly reactionary, accusing people of saying things they not only didn't say, but also didn't imply. Yet you take no responsibility for that and just gloss over them. Sorry, I don't respect that.
Shut up Betty
shareOldest trick in a troll's book, accusing real posters of being a troll.
I have no idea who Betty is, except that Ben//BenCaesar/God/etc seem to have some kind of thing against him/her on the IMDB2 board. Betty here is obviously Ben/BenCaesar/God/etc, and now also 666. You think you don't reveal yourself? You do. Easily.
Shut up Betty
shareWell, I personally saw you say ban multiple times. Maybe you can pull a fast one on others but I see through your fakeness.
I know you've edited your posts, if they're not there anymore. I'm not wasting my time looking for "proof".
Is that right. Do a word search to see who said the word "ban" most often. It wasn't me.
LOL, I didn't edit my posts. Either you think I did out of your own paranoia (which seems the most like explanation, given many of your other posts), or … there is no or.
I'm obviously not pulling a "fast one" on anyone. My posting history is here for anyone to read. I've been here posting consistently, civilly, for the past 3 or more weeks. Meanwhile, you're a newcomer, only here for a few days, and while your posts started out reasonably enough, they've become increasingly less so, until we arrive at this.
@CactusPants
Oh, I disagree! If they are such "great contributors, surely they can use verbiage which is not so offensive. I'm not referring to words used in an historical context. I'm currently viewing "Mercy Street". The N word is being used. I hang my head in shame, but we cannot wipe out history. I'm referring to everyday folks like you and me, posting and replying without foul/lewd words....PROFANITY! Can we not be more civil. I can just hear it now from a "great contributor:
"Four score and f-ing seven years ago our f-ing fathers brought forth on this f-ing continent, an f-ing new nation, conceived in f-ing Liberty, and f-ing dedicated to the f-ing proposition that all f-ing men are f-ing created equal."
or:"My fellow f-ing Americans, f-ing ask not what your f-ing country can do for you, f-ing ask what you can f-ing do for your f-ing country."
Ain't it pretty?
You do not have control over someone else.
I like a ton of people that cuss, they are not mean and they are serial killers or whatever you assume.
One can use cuss words and still be decent people.
"Ain't it pretty?"
"Isn't" it pretty you catachresticstar heathen with your solecistic syntax!
Here's a penny, stick it between your knees and see how long you can hold it there for.
@Wilson
Poor, pitiful Wilson. I purposely used ain't. If you had read it in context with my reply you would have caught the jest. BTW, catachrestic and star are two separate words....you nitpicking word police!
I'm glad you caught the humour in my post kspkap.
Context is king (Or queen) and when processing someone else's erring on the side of good faith until shown otherwise is the best foot forward attitude to take in my opinion.
Speaking of banning or punishing as a knee-jerk reaction to someone seems to show a wish to control and that's not why Jim is putting his hours in here.
Why do people *need to* fight? Is there a problem with having enough adult human self-restraint to be able to respectfully and civilly discuss things, without flinging insults at one another? In fact, I believe you said the same thing in one of your posts/threads about what you'd like to see happen here. Which actually *was* what it was like for the first few weeks. What a welcome breath of fresh air that was, however temporal.
What's wrong with learning how to be civil and respectful of one another? Do you want MC to become like IMDB was on many of the (now-deleted) boards, where very poor and disrespectful behavior was not only accepted but became the norm?
Why is it some kind of badge of honor to some to not put people who gave you "heck" (for whatever reason) to not put them on ignore? I've never understood this, although due to the boards I frequented, where trolling was at a minimum, my IMDB ignore list was short.
There is no such thing as totally free speech. Every site, including IMDB, has TOSs to abide by. Some are more tolerant than others, however even IMDB, which was so lax it allowed a whole culture of trolling to thrive on it, beeped out any number of words. If you objected to that, you also objected to totally "free speech." Thus far, there's no beeping. Thus far, there are no TOS at all.
Sadly Jim's initial "common sense" rule isn't going to be enough. It was for a while, but now it's not.
Well, if this board is boring as hell and packed with insane rules then nobody will be posting here. This isn't church. and we are not 5 years old. Why do you want to be told how to act?
Free speech means that others might say stuff that you're uncomfortable with.
Forcing others to be nice is not realistic...just use the ignore button.
There can be rules "ne nice on the general area" but on other boards, it should be expected that topics might not be to your personal standards but why infringe on other peoples happiness?
People can get heated during hot topics and movie discussions. THAT is what made imdb great. It was real.
'Why is it some kind of badge of honor to some to not put people who gave you "heck" (for whatever reason) to not put them on ignore?'- your quote
It was the politics board. If someone is speaking THEIR truth then I want to learn from them and I like to see their pov. I think ignoring every single person that you don't agree with is why the world is divided. I'm not offended by opposing views. I'm offended by unnecessary restrictions.
Wise words indeed!
The brood of hens won't approve of course but they can always go back to tumblr and regroup their next chicken's coup d'état (Pun intended).
"Well, if this board is boring as hell and packed with insane rules ..."
Who said proposed anything resembling that? This is what's commonly referred to as a Strawman Argument. As well, no one said or even implied this is church or that we're 5-year-olds, and I never said I wanted to be told how to behave. I don't need to be, and you may not need to be, but since you yourself have complained about how out of hand things got on IMDB with trolling, and said people should be respectful here, why would you disagree with anything I've said?
Occasionally getting heated whilst discussing hot topics of whatever kind isn't a problem. Allowing a culture to develop and take hold where flinging insults is acceptable (etc, etc) is a problem. YOU may see this as "keeping it real," but others don't.
It was great here for the first several weeks. People were welcoming, friendly, cordial, even (and especially) when disagreeing on various topics. In other words, they were engaging in adult, civil discourse (regardless of their ages), of their own volition, without any rules or mods. For whatever reasons, these were the types of posters who were drawn to this site.
I now see you've only been here for a few days, so you didn't experience that. Too bad, although you may have thought it boring and not "real," especially if you regularly hung out on the drama-filled politics board on IMDB.
If someone's genuinely speaking their truth, and you want to learn from them and understand their POV, that's a good quality, IMO. I'm not offended by opposing views either, and you seem to be implying that I am.
You also proposed an outlandish and extremely unlikely scenario where if you said you hated cats or books, or cats that read books, or books about cats, I might become offended by that and a mod with whom I have some acquaintanceship with and like for might target you as a result of this connection. I didn't respond to that part of your post, because I didn't think it was worth responding to. Anyone can come up with any exaggerated "what if?" scenario for anything, and use it for an argument. However, it's far from using common sense as a guideline.
Well said. "John Carter" of IMDb2 wants to impose his rules here.
shareHey Cat,
I can't determine who is replying to whom. This is why I type an @ before their screen name. But, to your post....I agree wholeheartedly!
Hi Ksp. Are the posts not nesting for you? They are for me, so it's easy to see who's responding to whom.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, thanks, and it's apparent most feel the same way. Trolls don't, and unfortunately there are now lots of them here, for obvious reasons.
"and it's apparent most feel the same way. "
Citation needed.
@Cat,
Sometimes (most) when I reply it shows up at the very bottom...quite a distance from the poster. Regarding your post, I had to minus out all the posts above you to see who you were replying to. Also, I'm still handicapped replying to long threads. My area to reply continues to shrink width wise, so I'm no longer able to comment/reply. Grrrr!
Ksp, that's interesting. So what you're seeing on your screen is like what IMDB had when viewed in flat mode. I consistently see it as nested which, as I understand it, is how Jim designed this site.
shareI know very little about you because I've only recently seen posts by you. I've liked what I've seen, but that's all I can say. Leia, and a few others, have been here for quite a while, and I've found them to be consistently civil, and helpful. That's all I can say about them too.
You don't have to worry about me becoming a mod. I briefly considered volunteering, only when it looked like my life was calming down (which is now isn't, again, so I don't have the time anyway), and when Jim's thread asking for people to volunteer was new. Yet I never did post volunteering. I considered it only because he was asking for help, and I am greatly appreciative of all he's done, so thought maybe I should consider giving something back.
I've known lots of people on IMDB for years as well, and at the moment can only think of a very few I think might make good mods. Not that I don't like them, but same as you, don't think most would make good mod material, for various reasons.
You do realize that you posted to Leia in this thread, suggesting she volunteer to become a mod? [Edit: My bad. You made that suggestion to the OP, not Leia. But she still didn't bring it up.]
I don't know anyone from the I Need to Know section. Maybe they'd be good, maybe not. I have no opinion.
BTW, I was on IMDB since … I think it was 2008. Same name, but lower case C. I frequently posted on the Mad Men, Halt and Catch Fire, and The Forsyte Saga boards. Just in case you want to verify my account yourself. NOT related to me being a mod :)
I was never a reg on "I need to know" but sometimes I'd answer threads or ask for help and I never witnessed any fighting or drama over there. It just seemed like true movie fans helping others for the sake of helping.
Also, Col himself, spent the last day of imdb posting on the 'I need to know" board. I was over there that day. He didn't want those posters mad at him. Deep down I bet, he knows they were the heart and soul of his board.
It's simple. Ban bad words from entering trending

Bad word filter in the trending. No adult themed titles will come on it. It is that simple.
I'm not exactly a fan of Col's, considering how he treated so many on the forums he himself created.
Good to hear you didn't observe any fighting or drama on the "I Need to Know" board. That's encouraging, but as I only personally visited there maybe three times ever, I can't vouch for this personally. So, again, I have no opinion about those on that board, and whether or not I think they'd make good mods.
Admittedly, I don't know how the system worked on IMDb, but in general for forum-based sites, moderation is necessary. Using common sense, it makes sense to have a larger team (provided they can be trusted) to get more done in a shorter time-span.
share"So, now it's as bad as the postings from IMDb. Wow, I think I'm taking a hiatus from here until all of this gets sorted out."
Yep, I'm right behind you. Have taken a break for the past few days, and now to see this has been going on. Too much trolling being allowed, not enough action taken to stop them.
The offensive content on the trending bar seems to have stopped, hopefully someone got them.
How can it be offensive if those are legitimate movie titles?
shareThey AREN'T legitimate movie titles!

They're not? Then how did posting to their boards get onto trending? How are there such boards to begin with?
I missed all of this, except for the screenshots someone posted, but assumed those who were trolling searched the site for anything with those words in them (films, shorts, whatever) just to fvck with MovieChat, to make it look bad.
Actually Cat, I checked them out and think they may be adult and independent films. I also got to see the trolls responsible for starting each thread that brought up all those titles...all sleazy names too. It seems that trolls like sleazy names to match their sleazy personalities.
Oh and...some of those titles don't even have boards!
Adult and independent movies, that makes sense. I only saw one or two of them, and actually didn't notice their user names, but will take your word for it.
How could some of those titles not have boards and yet be bumped into Trending?
Yeah, I should've wrote their names down for reference. 😒
A few titles took me to a blank white page with a "page not found" message...I have no idea how they got those in the trending bar. But if you click on a title with no picture, some of them are the one's that I got the blank white screen on. The one's on there now are short stories that one guy keeps posting. I guess he likes short stories...lol.
That's weird. I haven't yet gotten a blank page with a "page not found" notice, but then I missed the whole trending debacle.
shareIt's not in any of the blank one's on the trending bar now, those are just short stories. It was earlier that I ran across the blank white paged one's. I'm not sure that they said, "page not found", but it said something to that effect up in the top left corner of the white pages, in small black letters. But, like I said, none of the "no pic" titles in the trending bar right now are them, they're all short stories.
I wonder if the trolls will bomb the bar tonight...unfortunately, they probably will. I'll see if the titles show more blank pages and write down what they said on them.

The troll wasn't writing out profound or insightful comments on the cword, bjs or nword movie boards.
It was straight up trolling.
He's been doing it for the last few nights and it clogs up the trending area.

I don't know what that link is. I would suggest no one copy & paste that (do not go there).
Look, maybe it's a legit link (and I'll apologize if it is), but it's too unfamiliar. Unfamiliar = potentially unsafe for message board users.
Just take a screenshot next time and host it on Imgur. It's easy, and it's a website everyone recognizes.
Or if you want to link to the trolling, you'd link to the MovieChat thread or profile itself. Or just say the MovieChat user's name and tell us what board it's occurring on. Such as "Joe" from the Politics board (who seems to be back with his own trolling threads).

I checked out your link, and don't understand the point of it. E-splain?

I would ask you why your post on "Bullshit" was:
"[–] Bubbathegut (45) 5 hours ago
irony day 2"
And you posted a thread on "Butt" and then deleted it. Looks to me you're interested in trying to push boundaries and most likely in trolling, not having actual discussions about movies.
[deleted]
My apologies if admins deleted your thread on "Butt" (which I've never heard of). Why did you post "irony day 2" on the Bullshit thread? Looks like trolling to me.
Ok, you don't think I post about movies. Never mind that can be easily disproven by looking at my posting history and … blah blah, not worth responding to.
[deleted]
So, again, why did you only post "irony day 2" on the Bullshit board?
share[deleted]
So, let me get this straight. Even though you knew people were p!ssed off and annoyed by an obvious troll (or more than one -- as I've said, I wasn't here for most of it) posting inane posts on boards with obscene or at best questionable titles, just to mess with MC, all the same you thought doing the same thing was a good idea, and are now objecting to it because one of your posts got deleted? All righty then.

Not at all earl. It's 2:30am PST right now and all but 2 titles are profanity. It's awful!
shareIt started a couple days ago. But I didn't say anything because...

Fcking useless trolls. Can't wait for all of them to be banned.
shareGreat. Make me a moderator.
shareIt's childish, but it's temporary and their work will get messed quickly, especially the more busy the board gets.
shareI like the trending bar, but a part of me feels like I hog it if I spend to much time on one board or I do one after the other. I know others like discussing their favorites so I try to find a few threads quickly that I like before moving on.
