The IMDb Top 250 for Television is an absolute joke.

Going through the list all I see are shows that are only there because they're popular, were good at one point but overstayed their welcome, hit and miss per season, or shouldn't be there at all.

Take a look at True Detective at #21. It's two seasons in and even hardcore fans hate the second one. I don't think that something that has been 50% good deserves a 9/10. Deadwood is at #81 which is fine except that the show didn't even have an ending. A Clockwork Orange is #81 on the movie top 250 but do you think it would have the same score if it just abruptly ended and we had no idea what happened to Alex 655321?

Here are a few others: This is Us #54, Parks and Recreation #129, The Walking Dead #203 Person of Interest #249, Entourage #194, The Muppet Show #198

A lot of the shows are in its first season and have amazing scores and if the future seasons are mediocre, users won't go back to re-vote.

I don't think it's a joke, but it's definitely something one should take with a grain of salt. Metacritic is probably better for this type of list, but then again that one's not very good for older shows. If you use user generated voting algorithms it will never be an exact science because there will always be people cheating as well as people with simply poor taste in general. Taking all that into account, I think it's a good starting point and if you like a particular show, you can use the "similar to" function to find other things to watch.

I've never thought IMDB's scores were particularly representative of the quality of a film/show. It's just averaging very subjective "opinions" (couldn't think of a better word). You really like something, you give it a high score. Enough people do that, it gets on the top 250. It's more a list of what's really popular, than what's really good. "Rectify" isn't even on the list, and it's a really good show, has a high score, but not a lot of people saw that.

The Simpsons is 8.8, but the highest episode of last 2 years is 8.4! Most are 6.x.

reply

Why do people even check out those lists? Who cares what other people supposedly like.

reply

So many comedies listed?

reply

I don't know how many are comedies. But the scores are still out of whack 4 years later.

reply

Yeah, I noticed that before, lots of David Attenborough shows listed there, not something I'd go out of my way to rate tbh.

THATS WHY THESE LISTS ARE USELESS...THEY ARE BASED ON PEOPLE'S RATINGS...THE TWO MOST LIKELY TO RATE GROUPS ARE LOVERS AND HATERS...FCTOR THAT IN WITH THE SIZE OF RATING POOLS FOR THE SHOWS...ITS DEEPLY FLAWED.
