Please ban angryman53
All he does is post "this is racist" everywhere, it's getting pretty annoying.

and
batman6
and smithtutti
shareI haven't seen this "smithtutti" yet. What movies has he posted on? If he's trolling, let Jim know and link to his profile.
Others think we are squashing Free Speech but that isn't true. Post like a normal person, not bumping random movies and just typing "This movie is racist/she deserves whipping" and then leaving and never coming back.
Nooo! Smithtuti has one thread in I need to know, and it's hilarious. I wouldn't punish him.

sharehe has a right to free speech. If u dont like it, ignore him.
shareNo, they're right. They literally post about the same things (one about racism in every single movie from Rear Window to 48 Hours) and another about punishing females. They aren't even trying to start a discussion. They type a short phrase and that's it. They don't even return to the thread. That's trolling, not discussion.
Take a look for yourself - you can immediately tell they are NOT interested in deep discussion (AngryMan53 just joined 7 hours ago and has that many posts already):
AngryMan53's profile
batman6's profile
As Jim said, we are all for free speech and real discussions (even the occasional 'provocative' subject) as long as it's serious and civil.
Trolling (as those two are doing) will make message boards worse. 1-2 of them now become 20-30 later on if not kept in check. That's what made IMDB such a mess to read on certain boards.
They make my experience better, i like different personalities , even if they are autistic
shareAgreed about Angryman53. After I read this thread I stumbled across him on a Trending board, and then checked out his other posts. Definitely trolling.
Not sure if Batman6 is the same poster I came across on IMDB now and then or not. If it was, while he could be something of a pain/troll at times, but wasn't all that bad.
"Trolling (as those two are doing) will make message boards worse. 1-2 of them now become 20-30 later on if not kept in check. That's what made IMDB such a mess to read on certain boards."
Yep. IMDB allowed things to spiral out of control, virtually unchecked. I don't want to see that happen here. Nipped in the bud is the best course of action.
There is another poster named batman83 or something, and he seemed legit. His name just happens to be very close to this 'batman6' who is definitely trolling. After I made my post he is still bumping old movies and simply saying "She needs flagellating" and leaving.
The AngryMan53 just bumped the Vertigo (1958) board. You go in expecting an interesting discussion, question or review for this classic movie, but no, you see him simply type "This movie is racist. No black people."
Jim would not approve of that. He didn't go through all that hard, tiring work to preserve the boards for THAT type of behavior and content. He wants real movie/TV discussions.
Jim will take care of them soon enough.
Yeah, I agree. Both are clearly trolls, and personally I'm surprised they've survived this long... I think batman6 is worse out of the two, though.
shareYou're probably right, it's batman83 (or similar) I was thinking of.
"Jim would not approve of that. He didn't go through all that hard, tiring work to preserve the boards for THAT type of behavior and content. He wants real movie/TV discussions.

[yes]
Sometimes even batman6 accuses AngryMan53 of being a racist.
Like at the very bottom of this thread.
This guy sure likes talking to himself :)

No, Dazed, don't go! Please stay and help us make this site the greatest! Together we can all make this a great home. We can't let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch of us! Jim will give the bad guys the boot, I'm sure he will! 😃
share[deleted]
Yes, it certainly is, and we can all help keep it that way too. 😃
shareHa are you referring to me? I'm most definitely not a troll.
shareThe other batman guy ("batman6") is the one. Too bad you guys had such similar names.
I linked to his profile above, and hopefully Jim sees it and takes care of him. I think you should be safe. Jim wouldn't hastily delete or ban without looking at a user's profile and posts first. "batman6's" posts are the problematic one for sure.
Yes.
shareI think, AngryMan53, is much worse than, batman6, but, regardless, they both need to find the exit out of here!
share"Nipped in the bud is the best course of action." I read this in Barney Fife's voice!
shareHa, ha, I completely forgot Barney used to say that :D
shareOne of my most fav shows. I have rewatched so many times I have them memorized. I even named my dog after a character..Jubal.
shareWho was Jubal? I don't remember that character. I like the name, though :)
shareI love, The Andy Griffith Show! One of my all time favourites along with, I Love Lucy...hilarious show! 😄
shareYep, yep...I can hear ol' Barney now...lol. 😉
shareYes, it's batman6 who is trouble. The other batman is ok.
shareI agree with you, Atomic, AngryMan53, definitely needs to go. Batman6, is a little tamer but doesn't really say anything of importance...just a bunch of stupid stuff.
share[deleted]
LOL, oh my gosh, it's getting too late night or early morn for me. I read your comment, Dazed, as "We need an ignorant button." I've been up way too long. I'm blurry-eyed.
share"We need an ignorant button."
--------
Otherwise known as a "dislike" button LOL 😉

It's morning here too...like nearly 3am. I think it's time for me to hit it too. 😫
shareNeverstandinalone...It's nearly 3am for me...I'm right behind you for the sleep zone! 😫
Love the "ignorant" button though...lol! 😂😂😂
Dazed...That's what I've been hoping for too.

I say no. This is America. He has the First Amendment Right to be a racist, or an asshole, or both.
You still have to be accountable for what you say. These rights come with duties and responsibilities, as well.
On a site note, are we considered to be in the US? I know that where a site's physical servers are located, makes it subject to those local laws (correct?), but I've always considered the Internet as international waters, so to speak.
Very interesting question that. Jim with his experience with law for sure knows. I'm european myself, and I have seen people from places like India and Australia post, so I kinda saw it as a international site - even if the majority probably are from the US.
Anyway the ones clearly trolling and discouraging people from discussing doesn't deserve a place here, whichever country's amendment we follow. But we will have a team of moderators in place soon, so I'm not too worried.
I'm from Europe as well, that's why I asked. With sites like this you can assume more people are from the US, but also a sizable portion's going to be international.
Yes, hopefully we'll have some good moderation soon.
First amendment rights don't extend to message boards, and as the poster above me said, this is pretty much international waters.
I think it's pretty obvious he was trolling anyway, looking at his posts.
Good point. I guess this is pretty much international waters. However I still don't think he should be banned. Ignored yes. Banned no. But that's just me.
[deleted]
But where do you draw the line, and who makes the decision? And who guards the guardians?
[deleted]
Instead of leaving it up to one person, we should self moderate. If 20+ people report a post, a moderator reviews the post and makes a determination on whether it should be deleted. If a user has more than 3 posts flagged (due to the number of reports) which the moderator agrees is off topic, it will result in the user being banned. I think this is the most sensible way to take action against trolls/spam without the mods being unwilling participants in flame wars. I know this particular case may seem cut and dry, but we should impose the same standards for deletion across the board so we don't give the impression of the moderators being too trigger happy.
The number of reports will be hidden to general users, so those being spiteful, and reporting legitimate posts will have little to no effect.
That sounds like a good system, but how do we prevent groups of trolls from reporting posts and trying to get good users in trouble? There is also the free speech issue, I know trolls are pretty easy to spot, you know them when you see them, but some may try to silence people who have unpopular views.
I see this as only being a potential problem on extremely active threads. In that case, we should trust the moderator to make the right call, or use a sliding scale for number of reports that factor traffic. I don't think any system will be perfect, but this strikes me as the most sensible solution.
shareI agree that something along those lines would be fair. Perhaps closer to 10 than 20 for flagging a post, however, because I don't know how many people actively report troll posts.
share"Well I don't think it would be too difficult to discern what is trolling and what is not do you?
I mean for example disagreement is fine and to be expected, calling someone a moron because you disagree is not acceptable.Spamming multiple boards with the same post and employing sock accounts also not acceptable."
"Who makes the decision? Real life human moderators! IMDb was a perfect breeding ground for trolls because of a lack of moderation."
"Who guards the guardians?
I don't see a need really,we're talking about trying to make a message board which is enjoyable for all.
Denying someone the right to spoil others enjoyment of their pastime is hardly threatening their civil liberties!"
I completely agree with all of what you said.
Some trolls goes to the extant of doxxing people
share[deleted]
I hear, understand and respect all of your comments. I'm still against banning someone, but that's just me. So we will have to agree to disagree, and move on.
Meanwhile:
Nipsey and Cat,
Are you saying doxxing is occurring here?
Ultimately it's Jim's call, MovieMan. We can only give our opinions. I respect yours as well :)
As far as I know, there hasn't been any doxxing here.
Cat,
Yes it is and thanks.
Doxxing is a new concept to me (old skol guy here). How would someone do that, and how would we know that they're doing it?
And I have a right NOT to have to put up with him
shareHas the moderation even started yet? I hope not because if has begun it is not adequate. How hard can it be to start this? For a start just ban people who are continually abusive and who say variations of the same things over and over again. It's not rocket science.
share
I know, the trolls mentioned in this thread are still at it so I hope the moderators get to work soon.
You guys do realize that every time you respond to this, it automatically gets bumped to the top of the forum. and the troll is getting the attention he so desperately desires, right? If you ignore them and don't respond, they keep dropping. (unless they respond with their own socks)
share
Yes, and you just bumped it right back to the top, froid. Smooth move, dude. And so what?
Uh...no...YOU just did. Even smoother move, dude.
Hint: just let it go.
No, YOU just did. Tag, you're it! So what's the big deal?
Let's just bring this thread back to topic. the most recent posts here don't address that user specifically. Most here are asking questions and offering solutions on how to deal with trolls in the future. Feel free to start a similar thread if you wish to keep it substantive.
share
Sounds like a plan to me, ff.
On imdb you could report it as "flooding". No, "freedom of speech" does not apply on the interwebs.
shareI don't remember a "flooding" report option, although it may well have been there and I just don't recall it.
Absolutely, freedom of speech doesn't apply to the interweb, nor does it apply completely unfettered anywhere else.
Agree with FilmFan, most of the posts in this thread are discussing the general issue, not the specific user brought up in the OP. Might be a good idea to start another thread on the topic -- although there have been several already -- so it's a general topic, without any specific poster mentioned.
Either way, I don't care. Since that user hasn't posted in this thread, and as far as I know is unaware of it (seeming to have stuck to trolling on and reading specific boards), this doesn't appear to be handing out troll Twinkies, although who knows.
Flooding is an apt description. It would be useful to have a reason option for reporting, i.e. profanity, abuse, "flooding", spam, etc.
