What movies did you watch las week (02/26/17-03/05/17)

I am going to start this thread on this site before someone else does it. Hopefully it will catch on.

So yeah, just comment on the movies I watched and I will do the same for each and everyone. Cheers!

Mine:

Central intelligence (2015 bluray): More of a disappointment than anything. It's not a bad comedy per say but there is not a lot of "laugh out loud" moments. A convenient plot that lacks originally and…intelligence. The action scenes or rather poor too. At least I like the actors...5.5/10

Extract(DVD): From my memories of the first time I saw this I remembered it being original and funny. As I re-watched it, I realized it was original, okay, i'll give it that, but funny? Not really. Good actors with okay performances. Good story with okay dialogue. T'was good the first time, okay on rewatch. 6/10

TMNT: Out of the shadows (2016 Netflix): The first 30 minutes was very bad and if it was not for the fact that I'm a loyal fan (and that my three-year-old was there too), I would've turn it off. Fortunately, it got a little better once Casey came into the picture and the story became a bit less boring. There was a lot of references to the original story which was a good idea but still, the new movies have nothing against the older ones. I don't know if it's just me but it seems like they soften the face features of the turtles so they look a bit more friendly. Another good idea. The plane crash scene was a lot of fun and the graphics were impressive. 5.5/10

Ice age 5: Collision Course (2016 Netflix): Is it starting to be redundant? Maybe. Is it a bad movie? Probably not. Was the story original? I don't really think so. Did I have fun? For sure. Do I have anymore questions? No. 6.5/10

Les Seigneurs (2012 DVD): "A washed-up footballer turned alcoholic and living in Brittany enlists his old teammates to help the local fisherman to win some games in order to raise money and save jobs." A solid feel-good and festive French movie this is. Amazing cast that was well used. Very funny but also relatable. The main actor looked so much like Robert Downey Junior it was almost distracting. As good as a soccer movie can get. 8/10

Kids (1995 DVD): A very crude and convincing depiction of a summer in teenagers's life. It almost feels like a documentary. A very interesting and intimate one. The main male character is not a bad actor but he sort of annoyed me. It's the only thing that bothered me with the movie, everything else was great. 9/10

It's always sunny in Philadelphia season 9 (DVD): The madness goes on, for worst or better. Still love it. Overall: 8/10

reply

I walked out of Kids in the theatre and got a refund which bought me a ticket to Twelve Monkeys.

reply

So you never saw the ending... It's powerful, traumatizing and memorable.

reply

I've a funny feeling that Twelve Monkeys was a better experience (For me at least).

reply

12 monkeys is a great movie from one of my personal top directors. It's only my fourth favorite movie from him though. I Give it a 8/10. Kids is obviously a totally different type of movie but I think you either like it or hate it. It's very provocative.

reply

I remember there was some controversy about Kids (Its production company was a subsidiary of Disney) and that's what made me notice it in the first place. The fly-on-the-wall documentary style of filming coupled with a "Hello fellow kids" script left it flat and purposefully trying to be reactionary which, for me at the time, seemed not like an experience I'd go to the theatre for.

Perhaps I'll revisit it now that 20 years have passed and see how it fares with the passage of time.

reply

I see what you mean

reply

Kids is a great movie and it's pretty real so I give it a 9

reply

Man, I have not been able to watch any movies ever since I gave back my cable. Spectrum is gnarly on their prices. They even had the gall to back bill partial payments from since removing my cable. No way I am paying $150+ for internet and cable.

My sister did come visit and so I think I may have watched Finding Dory (2016 Bootleg website). It was definitely not as good as Finding Nemo, however, some parts were pretty funny.

reply

That sucks...
I love most animation movies but strangely I don't really enjoy those involving fishes. ( finding Nemo, shark tale) so I doubt I'll ever watch it .

reply

I have never seen Shark Tale, so do not feel bad about it. I watched Finding Nemo because it was a movie my sister, elder than I, had taken me to (still cannot believe how long ago that was). Finding Dory was a movie I watched on a bootleg site and since I found that source, I decided to let her in on it.

reply

Resident Evil ( 1-6 )
The mecanic 2
Tomb raider

reply

Beasts of No Nation
Conjuring 2

reply

Beast of no nation is a beautiful movie but it lacks a certain spark to make it really great. The kid is awesome. 7.5/10

reply

I agree - I gave it an 8/10. The kid was great.

reply

I saw resident evil four or five at the theater, I'm not sure which, it was in 3-D. It was not really entertaining and I love 3D!

reply

Both afterlife and retribution are in 3d,the final chapter is also in 3d

The extraordinary is in what we do,not who we are

reply

I watched Seabiscuit yesterday. Loved it.

reply

I started watching it once on the French channel in the translation was so bad that I stop after 10 minutes.

reply

I loved it too. The book is terrific also.

reply

I think the only movie I watched in the last week was Close Encounters of the Third Kind. First time i've seen it. Good movie.

reply

What a coincidence I watched it for the first time of my life two weeks ago. I even still have my quick review:
I would qualify it of pure entertainment. Just fun throughout. The acting was adequate, the special effects were great indeed, the music worked well, the overall ambiance was unique and there was not one dull moment. I bought the collector edition for nine bucks and I'm very happy I did it.

reply

I finally watched Moonlight and the first half of Taboo (episodes 1-4, so no spoilers please)

I'd give Moonlight 8/10... great acting and realistic production design... story pretty basic
Taboo is heading towards a 9 or 10... the only thing I don't like is the supernatural stuff... does every show need to have that element? The period detail and characters are fascinating.

reply

I can't remember what the first film I watched last week was but can remember the first from the week before so will start there instead.

The Handmaiden (S. Korea, 2016) - Drama, Mystery, Romance, Horror mixture from the director of Oldboy (2003). Best film I have seen so far this year.

Mother (S. Korea, 2009) - Crime, Drama, Mystery from the director of Snowpiercer (2013). Essential viewing for fans of Korean cinema.

Loner (S. Korea, 2008) - Average horror film that is still worth checking out.

Horror Stories (S. Korea, 2012) - Great horror anthology.

Horror Stories 2 (S. Korea, 2013) - Another horror anthology but not as god as the first one.

Sorum (S. Korea, 2001) - Horror/drama film. I thought this one was excellent but would only recommend it to people who are really into their Asian horror films & not people new to Asian horror.

Ghost In Love (S. Korea, 1998) - Fantasy, Horror, Romance. Entertaining time killer

Ghost House (S. Korea, 2004) - Comedy, Horror, Romance. I really liked this one, its a bit of light fun.

Manhole (S. Korea, 2014) - Horror, Thriller. Won't please fans of Korean thrillers because it isn't up to the very high standards but as a horror film it works okay.

Be with Me (S. Korea, 2009) - Pretty solid horror anthology.

Our Town (S. Korea, 2007) - Crime, Mystery, Thriller. Easy recommendation for people into Korean thrillers.

No Mercy (S. Korea, 2010) - Crime, Drama, Thriller. I would class this as a must see.

Bloody Beach (S. Korea, 2000) - Horror. Straight forward slasher film but Asian countries rarely ever make slashers so check it out.

The Fox with Nine Tails (S. Korea, 1994) - Fantasy, Romance, Horror. Obscure film worth checking out if you can find it.

Hidden Floor (S. Korea, 2006) - Horror. Pretty standard stuff, for horror fans only.

Geo-Lobotomy (S. Korea, 2005) - Obscure experimental horror film. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless they are really into obscure Asian horror and actively seeking out off-radar films.

Suddenly in the Dark (S. Korea, 1981) - Brilliant psychological horror that I rate highly but would take a guess most people would find "boring" ... Would safely recommend it to horror fans though.

Kazuo Umezu's Horror Theater: Ambrosia (Japan, 2005) - Short horror film. Pretty good but not essential unless you are really into Japanese horror.

Kazuo Umezu's Horror Theater: Present (Japan, 2005) - Short horror film. It is a bit messy in the way it is edited & story telling but makes up for its downfalls with some nice gore & novelty value being an Asian Christmas horror film (the only one I know of)

I love Korean movies and I actually saw Mother last week. It's the second coincidence of the sort tonight! Crazy.
Here are my thought: Mother ("Madeo" 2009 DVD): The resilience of a loving mother, how strong can it be!? This movie shows just that and with great finesse, style and tension. A solid slow-burner that demands patience but is rewarding in the end. My third favourite from Bong Joon-Ho. 7.5/10

reply

What is your favorite? My list looks like it is below but it might just be because Mother is still fresh in my mind. To be honest though these four films are all as good as each other for me. The director wrote "Antarctic Journal" if I could class that as his film that would be my favorite.

Mother
Memories of Murder
Snowpiercer
The Host

O/T are you on Letterboxd?

reply

I thought Snowpiercer was great. I'll use your list for discovering more Korean movies. I've seen a few but I know there are some gems yet to be found. I saw The Housemaid and Olboy and enjoyed both of those. Any suggestions, based on those? Hopefully, on Netflix?

reply

I keep lists of Asian horror films I like & the Korean one I include thrillers as well: https://letterboxd.com/klownz/list/south-korean-horror/ A few on the list I don't recommend but the list overall should definitely help anyone as a guide to browse through.

reply

Thank you!

reply

Bong Joon-Ho has another film coming out and it is a Netflix original film so he will have had full control so hopefully its good... Trailer below. Great cast as well & the cgi looks pretty good as well if comparing to The Host.

reply

Thanks again! I bookmarked your link. The trailer looks good, Tilda Swinton!

reply

Tilda Swinton is great in this. Than again, she's great in everything so no surprise.

reply

She's amazing in everything. She's brave, she'll do the weirdest stuff. I love her. Plus she's so stylish.

reply

Barking Dogs never bite: 9/10
The Host: 8/10
Mother: 7.5/10
Snowpiercer: 7/10

*Antarctic Journal: This one was a bit boring at times but still managed to keep my entire attention t'ill the end. I'd give it a 7.

I tried to get my hands on Memories of Murder for 2 years now. I'ts like un-buyable.

Not Im not on Leterboxd

reply

Memories of Murder was a good one... worth seeking out... they probably have it on some Asian drama site somewhere if no one is selling it

reply

I haven't been excited by any movie titles this week....there's just nothing available I want to give 2 hours to.

But I do know I'm beginning "The Great British Baking Show", Season 2.

All the chefs of the first episode are slicing their fingers up, they're so nervous : (

You watched all of that this week ? You have a few great movies in there and three that are in my favorites

reply

I'm retired. It's been rainy. I've had insomnia, and catching 2/3 hrs sleep near dawn. I didn't do a damn bit of chores this week. Yep, all of them, Stonekeeper.

reply

You should start writing small reviews when you watch a movie. And rate them. I think you have the time and it would bring a different energy than just listing.

reply

and If ya really need to know..I've been in my jammies all week and haven't showered..poor hubby.

reply

I'm sorry you've been having a rough time of it as late :( But I must say, that's an impressive bit of watching! Man...that puts me to shame a little, hah, but that's some list. Did you have a favorite/s out of those?

reply

LOL. Dreamers, that'd be like asking me which one of my children is my fav. 😀

reply

Oh, I get that! I certainly get that ;)

reply

Haha, weeks like that are always fun.
