Academy Awards mixup... staged?

Oscars ratings have been on the decline the last couple of years.

2014 - 43.7 million people watched live in the US
2015 - 37.3 million people watched live in the US
2016 - 34.3 million people watched live in the US

Look what happened with the Miss Universe pageant... it got lots of attention when Steve Harvey read the wrong girl's name.

Hollywood is a very manipulative industry (they sell emotions) and they are obviously all about making money (first, second and third), so I wouldn't be surprised if someone involved with the production ordered for the wrong envelope to be placed on purpose.

You maybe have a point, I remember years back I use to host a all night party (in the Uk the Oscars start at 11:00pm and finish around 5:30 am) we all chat about the dresses, shoes and movies. It was a disappointment after disappointment. Like lots of other people I stop watching it or even recordings it. People who really deserve the award for an outstanding performance are often disregarded. After people like Reese Witherspoon win an oscar and more deserving actors like Joaquin Phoenix are left behind I lost interest.
This year after Trump winning the election, Hollywood realised people are not mesmerised by actors and truly don't care when things matter. Maybe this was done to capture attention...who knows.

I've only watched it once or twice...and that was back in the late 70's I believe. Haven't watched since then. Nothing but a bunch of BS, all of it is a scam!

reply

I don't buy it as an honest mistake. I think the people behind the show learned from the Steve Harvey "mistake" and were using it. Even if it was honest if they're too stupid to print up cards that include "The winner for best picture" or "The winner for best actress,"
etc., in the cards with the winning result they don't deserve to be running the show. They were setting up a "mistake" to happen. Gotta call BS.

reply

Absolutely staged. Maybe for the ratings, maybe because some at the Academy didn't agree with the actual winner. But there's no way they would make this mistake after so many decades.

Category is written on each envelope, and there are two sets of envelopes for each award (second one as a backup). Warren Beatty took the wrong envelope on stage with him, so whoever handed him that envelope is to blame. Was it done on purpose or was it an honest mistake is yet to be seen. The plot thickens...

That is a very interesting hypothesis. We may never know.

reply

I don't think that mistake was staged, but I do think the tour bus people were all actors!
