Is there a way to add a new post to a thread without replying to someone?

Why do some replies (such as this one) appear nested and others (such as yours) don't? Just curious...

Because 9 is replying to the OP, which makes the reply look more like a general message in the thread whereas you're replying directly to them...just like mine is now nested under yours.
