HOW TO HELP

go to any/all movies and shows and start posting or re-posting? drive traffic up on as many threads as possible -- even if just saying hello to each other?

jim will get to all these technical things as soon as he can.

in the meantime, let us put MC.org on the map?

I think of Jim gets the boards looking like imdb had them it would shutdown any other place. People would come in droves. Yes spread the word.

I'm going to post on the individual boards and also promote the site more once the notification feature is up. It's great if current MC members are already posting a lot on the individual movie/show/actor boards and are willing to manually check for replies, but I think it will pay off more once notifications are up. Especially when it comes to brand new visitors who might take a look here after hearing about it from us, but who may not fully realize that this site itself is brand new, and that the archived posts largely (so far) originated from people who are not currently active on this site. If you make a big push for new members, who don't know the background story or context of this site, they may actually be put off when or if they get the impression that they've visited an essentially inactive archive, with a different set of people who are active in General Discussions, vs. the "gone people" whose "dead posts" are in the 90% of the site that is archived individual movie/tv/actor boards.

I would suggest that, as we restart activity on individual movie/tv/actor boards, we try to get in touch with some of those board's previous contributors if possible. We should have a dedicated thread in General Discussions, "Reconnecting with Former IMDb Board Members" or something, and see if anyone with similar board interests are also here. Send them a private message (when this feature comes) or reply to them to say hi and just let them know you're going to be on those boards again if they feel like having some conversations there.

It would be nice if there was some moderate activity in the individual movie/TV/actor boards before a good chunk of brand new users were to visit and get a first impression. Early adopters like us tend to be a much more open-minded, patient group. But people who come here because "somebody linked to this place on Twitter" are much more likely to base their first impression on what they see in 2 or 3 clicks. And if they conclude it's dead, they'll leave, and the next time they see someone mention moviechat, they'll have already made up their mind.

Another thing you don't want is for new people to come along posting everywhere thinking we're 100% up and running as a discussion site, and waiting for replies... and not getting them. They'll think the place is dead, when actually someone may have replied. Many people aren't going to be willing to manually check the boards and threads that they posted in, just to see if someone replied at some point. That's why I think it's best to wait for the notifications feature before this site gets heavily promoted.

Another feature that I think would make activity and community much more productive is if we have some kind of "Recent Posts" visual, a quick way for people to know where there's been recent activity and get a feel for our evolving community's tastes. It should be eye-catching and good to look at. The way you see this kind of info on places like ProBoard's free forums and the old phpBB boards is really sedate and can make a site look stagnant. How about a banner across the top, right under the main search banner? Kind of like how on IMDb that real estate was for the newest trailers or movies coming out this week, on MovieChat it could be for the 5 or so boards that have gotten the latest posts.
