Linking username to IMDb imported posts
Can we get an option to do this?
Also thanks for making this site, it's awesome.

Bump. I was wondering about this too. I made a lot of posts with my old account, same username as my current account, and I was hoping I could make my old posts part of my current account. There's got to be a way.
shareImpersonation would be rampant , and since IMDB doesn't provide 3rd party OAuth sign-in option , and no linking with userid/username at least none of them so apparent , it's far-fetched. I'll let Jim comment on this but just my 2 pennies.
shareI'm not a tech person so this might be an ignorant question, but is there a way we could use our email addresses to link them or something? If I register my email address and it's the same one as the email address I use for my IMDb account, it would prove it's me.
If not, I could suggest phone numbers, but I didn't authenticate on IMDb using my own phone number (I had once, using my previous account, but I couldn't do it again after i'd deleted that account). I'm pretty sure the last phone number I used to authenticate was the number of a friend whom i'm no longer friends with, who had agreed to let me use hers. Not sure I could contact her to ask her to let me use the number again. Hmm.
At the risk of sounding selfish, I'd hope they wouldn't go with the e-mail thing. I used an old e-mail for my account there and I don't have access to it anymore. And with the amount of "I've been on IMDB for a decade!" posts I've seen floating around, I can't imagine I'm the only one.
If IMDB hadn't decided they, for whatever reason, needed to take down the private messaging system as well we could've potentially sent the guy messages confirming that, yes, the person on MovieChat with the same username is me, but, well, they did take the private messages down. Admittedly that'd probably become really impractical really quick if this place gets a lot of people.

Don't you have to type in the email ID to log into IMDb? If the email address in question no longer exists (which it wouldn't, right, if you haven't had access to it in years? Don't most of them expire eventually if they aren't logged into enough?), then you could just remake it with the same ID, assuming no one else has made one with the same ID in the meantime, and it should still count because it would be connected to both the IMDb account and the MovieChat account.
Again, that's assuming this would work. I don't know anything about this kind of stuff so I don't know if it would.
Seems to me the people with the real problems would be the ones who deleted their IMDb accounts. I still have mine though, so if there's a way, i'm good.

As far as I know it still exists I just can't get into it. I forget exactly what happened, either I lost the password and the way to recover it is just awful, or for whatever reason it wanted me to jump through a bunch of security hoops that I couldn't get through.
That sucks, I hate when that happens. Well, hopefully they can figure out a way to authenticate who we are that takes all these factors into account.
shareThe private messages loss was huge for me, as many of my favorite people on the IMDB boards I knew by PM only and we did a lot of sharing in the final days (so to speak). It was my understanding that when those messages arrived in my regular e-mail inbox they would remain there. Alas, they didn't, and I wonder why...and some, which have been accessible for literally years, have vanished. I'd have downloaded them all to my HD if I knew this was going to happen. Dang! Fortunately, I sent my personal e-mail in those last messages as well, however if the recipients didn't save it they're in the same boat as I am. Couldn't they have warned us this was going to happen? The PM system wasn't exactly the same as the messaging one but was apparently on the same "grid".
shareYes, I'm very curious how this site will handle the integration of new and archived posts, e.g., replies to archived posts, and any possible linking between archived users and current users. This is going to be an important point going forward as the individual boards' activity picks up.
The only problem I can see is what if someone registers here with a name that was in use on the old board, but it isn't the same person? I mean obviously, not lal 15 million users from IMDB have registered here yet. And by the time they do come over here, someone else might have snagged their old name.
I didn't even have an account at IMDB, and I have no idea if this name I picked for MovieChat was ever in use over there. It was available here, that is all I know, so it let me make this account. This name might have been used over there, and I shouldn't have that other person's posts under my profile. It wouldn't be fair to them for me to take credit for their posts. And conversely, they might have posted something awful that I wouldn't want under my name.
For that reason, I kind of think that Moviechat should start as a clean slate. the archives are the archives, but only posts made here should count here.
And jim has no way to check if the emails match since he doesn't have access to the IMDB member data, and we don't even have emails linked to our accounts here yet anyway.
Thank you!
I've said the exact same thing on another post, the only way possible to link the previous imdb user to this moviechat user if you can come up with some proof of ownership.
Yes..is this Important?
