Future of This Board

For the time being, the single "General Discussion" topic, with a very primitive message board system, suffices. No formatting of text, but you can click on a name and see posts they've started and replies they've made.

I'd like to see a new set of boards implemented, using a state-of-the-art board system. The system IMDB used, with its ability to reply to individual posts, and view them nested, was very good. It was very easy to read.

The one thing they lacked, of course, was an upvote / downvote system, one that would hide posts with sufficient downvotes. Had they had that, any trolling problem would have been fixed. I think that's an essential feature. If this site gets popular, the trolls will arrive.

I don't feel a need to be able to add to the archived threads. They should just remain here for future reference.

There should be a way to add a new message board for a film based on its IMDB title number. Basically, if you search for a board by title and number, and it tells you it doesn't exist, you get a chance to create it.

In a perfect world, there's a message board system out there that is not only close to ideal, but is open-source and could be tweaked as needed by volunteer coders.

I think the boards are doing okay despite your criticisms.

reply

Why did you necro this post?

reply

I was using my old tablet and I thought I was on the first page of GD. I honestly didn't realize it was 3 years old until someone mentioned it.

reply

Oh, that explains it. Thanks.

reply

The site could definitely be improved, but I don't like any of your ideas, to be honest.

And if you don't like the archived threads on a board, just create a new thread!

reply

where you been?

reply

Archived threads suck. Just let me respond!

reply

I second the upvote/downvote addition.

reply

Agree would be enough. Down voting creates a situation where cliques start to form and you get a reign of terror where the clique just runs over everyone else. In the end people stop posting and then the clique eventually stops as well.

End result - dead forum.

reply

I can see that. Still, it would be nice to be able to dismiss posts that, let's say, are written intentionally to provoke a negative response.

reply

Yeah the upvote/downvote system does become toxic. Reddit is an echochamber for having it. It’s so much more annoying and destructive than having to skip over the occasional trollpost.

A like button could be ok but it’s actually nice to have a few remaining pockets of the internet where everything isn’t quantified into a points game.

reply

True, ignoring idiot posts is more effective.

reply

how about a button to send them an mp3 of going like β€œpshhhhh”

reply

These boards are nested. It takes some getting used to, but the first post has a light background and the response is a dark grey. If there are a number of responses from a comment from different people just follow the colour all the way down.

reply

Better color codes, or just more colors, to tie posts together would be helpful, at least to me.

reply

Yeah, it's a little hard to see and it takessome getting used to, but it is nested unlike what the OP is saying.

reply

It's not easy tracing a comment back to see which post spawned it. More numerous or at least brighter colors would make a big difference.

reply

The trolling was actually worse a while back until the Admin/Mods finally did something about it.

I just block anyone I suspect of being a troll. Not that difficult.

A search function would be great for threads. A better board system is needed more like traditional forums and the way they are set up.

reply

I just realised this thread is 3 years old and until today no one responded to it πŸ™Œ

reply

Huh. I hadn't even noticed.

reply

And the OP has not been here for 3 years, so the OP can piss off.

The real question is why we felt the need to resurrect this corpse. This site will never be an iota different from what it is today.

reply

My first thought was something along the lines of "Okay, why don't you pony up the $$$ and do that?" Followed by "Eh, I don't want to see this place turned into Reddit or Facebook."

I always wonder what happened to people who posted stuff like this and then disappeared after a few posts πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Can't tell who gave it CPR, because we don't have specific timestamps.
