The Temptation of St. Tony
This strange, dark 2009 Estonian drama's stark black-and-white look and feel reminded me of Ingmar Bergman flicks I'd seen. It's about a dude named Tony whose whole life starts to mysteriously unravel for no reason after his wife totally loses it and dumps him,he suddenly gets laid off from his job,and sees his friends start acting weird as hell for some reason. He decides to just go and try to make sense of what's left of his life by going on a journey, where he meets a number of strange people and sees a number of strange things going on. There's some dark humor in there, like the opening first scene of the film, which involve a car crashing near a funeral procession on the beach, and then later on an old dude who may or may not be Satan himself starts walking on the nearest wall just for the hell of it. Things really get surreal and much weirder from then on.
It got a very limited U.S. release when it came---saw this weird, disturbing trailer with no English subs for it---it had the look and style of a 1960s European New Wave movie which I found intriguing, and it caught enough of my attention to want to see it. It never played anywhere near me so I got the DVD and watched it instead. Very strange, and worth watching enough to track down.
