Another excellent restoration by 3D Film Archive of Canada's first horror feature and first 3D movie.
Directed by Julian Roffman, who seems to have embodied the entire Canadian movie industry, it's a weird tale of a psychiatrist who falls under the malign influence of an ancient tribal mask.
After receiving said mask by post from a suicidal but well-organised patient, Dr. Allan Barnes is compelled to put it on and see into a hellish new dimension, courtesy of some remarkable 3D sequences.
Populated with zombies, skeletons, disfigured priests, rubber snakes and no end of other bits and pieces, the three 3D sections, totalling about 15 minutes of screen time, have been altered from their original red/cyan anaglyph format to the modern polarised Blu-ray format. The results are a stunning improvement and the movie has never looked this good. The original anaglyph scenes are included as an extra for anyone wishing to compare old and new.
The original intro and some missing scenes removed from the shorter "Eyes of Hell" re-release have also been restored.

I saw EYES OF HELL at a revival house in 1997 and remember that the 3-D effects were definitely not the best I had ever seen. It was on a double bill with THE CORPSE GRINDERS.

The restored version's 3D sections have none of the ghosting you see with anaglyphs so you may be pleasantly surprised.
Now patiently waiting for the new year and "Gog".
