Age Appropriate LGBTQ Movie?

But I'm A Cheerleader is rated R, but I can't think of a more appropriate movie.

The reason for the R-rating is because of sexual innuendo. Not nudity or anything. There isn't any nudity or violence, or even foul language. I think it's your best choice assuming an R-rating isn't going to be a problem.

What about something like Geography Club? Being that it's set in high school, I can't think of a better audience to show it to.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower has a really great depiction of a gay youth and his struggles, but I wouldn't say he's the main focus. It's still a worthy film to consider showing to teen/young adult audiences, particularly as it deals with personal loss and mental illness.

I thought Geography Club was really sweet. And it's about a high school GSA, so it definitely seems like an appropriate choice.

Thank you, both for those suggestions. Geography Club might be the very thing. It's so close to home in that the kids often call the GSA something else for their parents' sake. I'll bring it up to the group along with Wallflower. I think Cheerleader could be problematic, especially given the R rating.

If I were you I would watch But I'm A Cheerleader yourself, and see what you think. The R-rating wasn't very fair in my opinion, and frankly I think they gave it that for no other reason than it dealt with homosexuality. And it was pretty much standard practice to always give an R-rating to such movies in those days. Like I said in my other post, it doesn't have any nudity, violence, or foul language. It just has sexual innuendo and same-sex kissing. Personally I think it's perfect for teens.

Geography Club is also a great choice though.

Yeah, I have to agree that the R rating wasn't really necessary. I think there may be some language, that's about it.

When I was in high school, I was shown quite a few 18+ films in both English and History class. Our parents had to sign consent forms in order for us to be allowed to view it without incident.

Thanks. You're right about the language. I had forgotten about it though because of how mild it was. But there are definitely a few f-bombs in there. Not many though. Again there was no nudity, no violence. Just a lot of homoerotic innuendo and same sex kissing. I think it could have been safely rated PG-13.

The truth is this movie is pretty mild compared to other things kids are exposed to. And it's really well done. And it has a stellar cast. It's guaranteed to be a hit.
