I'd love to see a epic scale disaster movie (forest fire, volcano, flood) and have legitimately good acting, direction, dialogue, and plot! It makes me sad seeing all those disaster movies made for the Syfy channel. They are so bad that I can't even watch them without rolling my eyes.

I'm okay with giving Hollywood a little latitude in disaster movies but a really good one would be great. So what are the ideas?

How about the explosion of Santorini which wiped out Minoan civilization - or badly damaged it?
How about the Asteroid or comet strike or volcanic explosion which caused several very cool years in the 530s and may have had important historical results?

Excellent choice. However, if I understand the Santorini eruption correctly, the excavations showed no trace of the Minoans other than the residual trappings of their doomed civilization that were left behind. This leads me to believe that the Minoans abandoned their homeland and fled to other land via the sea. The Minoans were a very advanced civilization in their time.
But how many of their ships fleeing from Santorini (which was not yet its name, of course) were wrecked by tsunamies from the explosion?
And more importantly many Minoan cities on Crete and other coasts were struck by the tsunamies from the explosion. The vast clouds of ash from the explosion certainly did the climate and the air quality no good also.
