Fiction v Reality based sports films?

The best sports films for me are the ones based on true stories, 'Miracle', 'Raging Bull', 'The Rookie', 'Friday Night Lights', 'Rudy' etc.

They don't matter that you know the ending or outcome, whereas if it's made up it's too hard to avoid cliches and sterotypes.

Are there any 'great' sports films not based on a true story that aren't comedies? 'Rocky' fits the bill and I would push the case for 'Any Given Sunday', despite it being widely criticised and disliked.

Is Hoosiers not a true story (I thought it might have been but really don't know) and is Girlfight (which I confess I haven't seen) a great movie?

Hoosiers is loosely based on a true story. I think the mantra that Hollywood likes to use is Inspired by a true story or along those lines.

Girlfight is an incredible independent first film. 9/10.
