Good, gritty boxing film directed by John Huston.

Great novel written by Leonard Gardner.

One of my all-time favorite books.

Yes sir, this is my favorite boxing movie. I have never read the book, but this movie felt like nonfiction. It has to be the most un-romanticized sports movie of all time. It gets little love nowadays, but huston captured the flawed characters in this sport very, very well.

I find it rather interesting that the great studio director, whose career was built within the traditional system (with a little help from dad), was able to make such a great film in the spirit of the so-called "New Hollywood" of the early '70s.
