J Dilla's music is boring
His beats are conducive to "off the top of the head"-style flows that are equally dull. However, I'll stay open minded. If you know of a beat that J Dilla did that you consider great, please post a link.

De La Soul-Stakes Is High and Royce da 5'9"-Let's Grow.
shareRaekwon has two dope tracks produced by him, House of Flying Daggers and Ason Jones.
shareCurse your tongue... I will not have ill talk of the late great Mr. James Dewitt Yancey (JK...lol)!
How can you say Dilla's beats are boring... especially considering the current state of Hip-Hop where everyone is using the same three or four producers?
Some of my favorite Dilla beats:
The Pharcyde - "Drop"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4QZ89VCrIs
Common - "It's Your Wold"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsrxvoWkLyM
Slum Village - "Fall In Love"

Erykah Badu - "Didn't Cha Know"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rte5N6mF9ic
"I rope-a-dope the evil with righteous bobbin' and weavin'..."
I don't like all Dilla beats, but those that I do like, pretty much blow me away. The clicks and the claps; the sample and keyboard blends; the unmistakable Dilla sound that evolved into another unmistakable Dilla sound. His sample chopping, his Moog-created bass, and his original beats all fascinate me, to be honest.

The only song that remotely does anything for me is "Drop" but J-Swift completely annihilates that beat with any of the songs he did for Pharcyde's Bizarre Ride album.
I mean if we're talking jazzy tracks, the samples, programming, and vocal arrangements in songs like "4 Better or 4 Worse", "Otha Fish", "Soul Flower" and the remarkable, Hendrix-sampling "Passin' Me By" downright embarrasses anything J Dilla has done.
Not only is J-Swift better at it, so is Prince Paul, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and The Beatnuts. Price Paul can't even be pegged as a jazzy hip-hop producer. That dude is a conceptual artist. A Prince Among Thieves, Gravediggaz, Handsome Boy, and to be specific, a beat like "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'" practically leaps out of my speakers because it's so full of energy and flavor.
J Dilla to me is hip hop muzak. 💤
